Convicted killers escape maximum-security prison with power tools and extra bedding

A manhunt is underway in Upstate New York for a pair of inmates who pulled off an elaborate overnight escape from a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border, according to news reports.

On Sunday, more than 200 law enforcement officers using bloodhounds and helicopters were searching for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, in the region surrounding the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., according to the Associated Press.

The men were referred to as “dangerous individuals” by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who joined searchers to examine the prisoners’ escape route before holding a news conference outside the prison.

“It was an elaborate plot,” he said, noting that it was the first time that anyone had escaped from the maximum-security portion of the institution, which has been open since 1865 and is known as “Little Siberia” because of its isolated location and the region’s harsh winters.

“You look at the precision of the operation,” he added. “It was truly extraordinary.”

The daring escape, in which the men used power tools to cut their way out of the prison walls, brought to mind the infamous escape from Alcatraz by three inmates in 1962.

Authorities discovered that the two men’s adjoining cells were empty during a morning check. Cuomo said the men left clothing and other items in their beds to make it appear that they were asleep, according to Reuters.

“A search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped,” Anthony Annuci, the acting state corrections commissioner, told the AP. “They went onto a catwalk which is about six stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots.”

Back in the day they'd have been referred to as dangerous men. Alas, back in the day, these guys would have met "old sparky" by now.

I little background on these two...

Richard Matt, 48, is serving a sentence of 25 years to life following his conviction in Niagara County for three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping, and two counts of robbery after he

kidnapped 76 year-old William Rickerson and killed him prior to dismembering the body on December 3, 1997. Matt was transferred to Clinton Correctional on July 10, 2008.

David Sweat, 34, is serving a sentence of life without parole following his conviction in Broome County for one count of first degree murder after he caused the death of a Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy on July 4, 2002. Sweat was transferred to Clinton Correctional on October 30, 2003.

Reading upon Matt, I discovered that he was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years in Mexico, but that the Mexican authorities released him back to the U.S. because of his penchant for trouble-making while in prison. During his lengthy trial he came to court with a remote-control taser under his clothes, accompanied by two specially-trained members of the jail staff. A real piece of work. To say he’s dangerous is probably an understatement.

Staff at this institution should watch the show that profiled the Black Dolphin maximum security prison in Russia. Those officers know how to shake down a cell. Whoever built the prison also knew what they were doing. No one escapes from Black Dolphin.

One of these days the prison officials will catch onto this ploy!

How about a cheap Home Depot infrared detector ...

It was constructed in 1844. Bids must have been real low back then. LOL!

Matt has a Marine Corps tattoo on R should. Was he in fact a Marine? Also, he escaped from Erie County jail once. Murdered a guy in Mexico., etc. A real touch-hog. Wonder if he had connections to the drug cartel?

It’s obvious their cells were not being checked on a regular basis. The other choice is some of the guards decided not to notice all this drilling and deconstruction. Maybe the prisoners were ‘owed a favor’ by certain guards.
