HARTFORD – As Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Thursday he was open to tweaking the tax side of a budget that has alarmed several large Connecticut employers, General Electric told employees it has assembled an exploratory team to look for "another state with a more pro-business environment."

Does Texas (or Missouri, or South Carolina) really want the baggage that comes with GE?

I mean, their HQ is in über-Liberal Fairfield County, and their other divisions (jet engines, or am I thinking of P&W?) are from the decidely pro-union Democrat areas.

Its not like GE could just swap out those CT workers for new ones in whatever state they move to. The work they do is too skilled. So you’d be transplanting not only those workers but also their ideologies.

GE lost $32b because of the financial crisis. Its profits in the following years were offset by those losses, thereby generating no federal tax liability. Any company is eligible for this kind of tax write-off.

And this is coming from GE whose CEO was ecstatic about the potential “strategic alliance” GE was establishing with the Obama Admin in 2009.

Imagine Connecticut with GE, Aetna, and the other major insurance companies moving the headquarters out of the state! I think the personal income tax in CT was only established in 1992 or so — it is now among the highest taxed states in the country and the budget is an absolute mess. Way to go, Dems! You’ve done it again!

It's curious how the foreign auto makers seem to set up shop in South Carolina,Georgia,Alabama,Tennessee,etc rather than Michigan,Ohio,etc.

GE corporate offices are in Fairfield, CT just off the Merritt Parkway at the Sport Hill Road exit ... that was my exit to my home in Easton, CT. GE has a large presence in the area. A adjunct professor at Fairfield University who worked for GE taught one of my wife's post graduate classes. Purely coincidental but I ended up sitting next to him on a flight to Chicago once ... he was returning later that day as he had a class that evening. He joked as we were getting off the airplane that he would be seeing my wife before I did ... it was a two day business trip for me.
Losing GE corporate would be an economic blow to that area of CT no question.

One exception:

Honda would like to have a word with you about their Marysville and East Liberty factories in Ohio. If you’re driving a Honda built in the US, there’s a good chance that it was built in the Buckeye State.

So far, they have managed to stay nonunionized despite Ohio’s lack of RTW. That might be an oddity, but their presence is not in question.
