Spelling bee officials confront racist reaction

The National Spelling Bee preliminary round is being held today, and its officials are confronting the racism that has accompanied it in recent years.

Indian American children have won the spelling bee for seven straight years and 11 of the last 15.

Paige Kimble, the Bee’s director, addressed the question last week, partly because of the racially charged tweets that have grown to accompany the spelling bee.

“We certainly followed the coverage last year,” Kimble said, “and we are aware of Twitter posts that are not nice, that indicate that we have a long way to go as a country in embracing all of our immigrant population.”

“Blacks have been winning sprint races, basketball, baseball, and most of the “fast” positions in football for decades.”

Yep-—it’s been a long time since an Irishman won the Boston Marathon. Kenya has virtually owned it for almost 30 years.

I guess I missed the accusations of racism./s

That was an early Saturday Night Live sketch where Chevy Chase, as a psychologist, was doing word association with Richard Pryor. A classic, funny as could be, and WAY too politically incorrect for today’s world.

Found it:

Favorite racial and ethnic groups will be given free misspellings on a sliding scale based on statistical performance to make things “fair” and Indian kids will be assigned 1 misspelling for a certain percentage of participants determined by lot. Ebonic spellings will be ruled “correct.”

I seem to recall that quite a few of these National Spelling Bee winners are also home-schooled?

Not only do their parents push them to succeed, the parents also recognize that there is a better chance of success when their kids are not trapped in a Government Indoctrination Center.

I bet the racist reaction is mostly from liberals and probably certain other entitled minorities

then 14, and his co-winner Ansun, then 13, were greeted with a barrage of racist comments on Facebook and Twitter:

Seriously though... who would ever be "greeted" by comments on Twitter? did these kids even use Twitter? The fact that they can spell would indicate NO.

All the words come from a predetermined list, so everyone has access to ALL the answers. The only difference is the time and effort into studying.

As them to spell “niggardly” if you want a reaction.

Don’t you mean “axe them to spell...”

If an Indian kid can spell all the names in his family the dictionary is a piece of cake. Q: where did Indians get their names? A: They picked them up after an explosion at a scrabble factory.

...until the “psychologist” said the “n-——” word, at which point Pryor’s response was “dead honky”...

A very funny routine.

India has the same cultural advantages as many other Asian countries (cohesive family structures prioritizing education), with the added benefit that its youth learn to speak English fluenty, as the county is basically bi-lingual (Hindi and English). So I’m not surprised with these Spelling Bee results in the US.

In other words, Indian Privilege

“It's all-because there were no AfricanAmericams ANYWHERE.”

No wonder. They can't even spell their own names. I'm not sure some of them are even pronounceable.
