BALTIMORE - The president of Baltimore City's police union says Police Commissioner Anthony Batts felt it was necessary to apologize for some of the things that happened, and didn't happen, on the day of the riots one month ago.
Batts addressed a crowded meeting of the FOP Lodge #3 membership Tuesday night, but he left without answering any questions from police or the media. FOP President Gene Ryan says he wrote down some of what the commissioner said.
“Some of his quotes were 'I let you guys down. I apologize to every man and woman in this room because I let you down. I will not let you guys out there by yourselves. We are a good organization, good police, and he's ready to lead us. And it will never happen again,’” Ryan said.
Ryan said the apology was related to the lack of action on the part of police as the violence began both outside Mondawmin Mall, and also two nights earlier, outside Camden Yards.

There was a very good TV series called “The Wire”. It was all about the Baltimore police and the perps they sought to bring to justice.
I had a hard time believing that Baltimore could be as bad as depicted in the series but now I realize they were soft-peddling the mess that is Baltimore.
Batts can blubber all he wants, but Balmer cops are only going to show up to a crime scene to take reports and gather evidence, not to stop anything. They might have to do some creative thinking to delay going to a domestic violence call or a robbery in progress report, but I’m sure they’ll think of something.
