Opinion: Capitalism is killing America’s morals, our future

Yes, capitalism is working ... for the Forbes Global Billionaires whose ranks swelled from 322 in 2000 to 1,826 in 2015. Billionaires control the vast majority of the world’s wealth, 67 billionaires already own half the world’s assets; by 2100 we’ll have 11 trillionaires, while American worker income has stagnated for a generation.

But for the vast majority of the world, capitalism is a failure. Over a billion live on less than two dollars a day. In his “Capital in the Twenty-First Century,” economist Thomas Piketty warns the inequality gap is toxic, dangerous. As global population explodes from 7 billion to 10 billion by 2050, food production will deteriorate. Pope Francis adds, “Inequality is the root of social ills,” fueling more hunger, revolutions, wars.

"In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty you’re talking about, the only cases in recorded history, are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are worse off, worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that depart from that. So that the record of history is absolutely crystal clear, that there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by the free-enterprise system.”

Even Milton Friedman would not be supporting the free trade agreements that are leading to where the world is heading today. Trade should be used to lift up the lesser nation, instead its being used to subsidize and further entrench the inequality intrinsic to them as the western world does not require the third world to earn better access to its markets.

America is not “suffering” from Capitalism or the Free Market. American is suffering from Fascism which is a collectivist philosophy aligned with socialism.

Keep deception and lies far from me,
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion,
That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the LORD?”
Or that I not be in want and steal,
And profane the name of my God.

Thanks Oldeconomybuyer.

For the billion who live on less than two dollars a day, capitalism -- more accurately, free market economics -- has *never been tried*. Partisan Media Shill alert.

Milton Friedman once said that the beneficiaries of free trade are many, and they don’t know who they are, while the victims of free trade are few, and they know who they are. I’d say the same about freedom in general.

A fertile mind is the creator of wealth. Some may have captured the coal, oil, copper, and diamonds and become rich but the truly fertile mind controls his own destiny through his invention and thus his own wealth.

The USA is NOT a capitlist country - we have socialism - and cartel busineses that are protected from compitition by their friends in the government. This is a long way from the free enterprise of the 1960’s..

The first time there is a brain stem implant and an electrical surge that kills vital functions in the brain that is controlled by a puppetmaster I’m going to say “told ya so”. No way the fedgov would let that opportunity slip by. Instant termination for citizens should keep them in line. And backdoors? You better believe it for BIG time money.

On the contrary. SOCIALISM (or any pseudo or partially socialist big-government “solution”) is what is destroying the moral fiber of the country. period.

Most of the billion poor in the world live under one form or another of socialism. Zimbabwe is an example.

Socialim in practice involves a dictator and a kleptocracy that preach redistribution of wealth as a way to steal the country blind and enrich themselves in the process.

Capitalism requires the rule of law.
