WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, today released the following letter commemorating Memorial Day.
Friends,
This Memorial Day weekend, in cities and towns all over America, small red paper flowers will be worn and carried by Americans honoring our veterans.
The paper flowers symbolize the poppies WWI veteran John McCrae wrote about in his famous poem, “In Flanders Field,” after being struck by the beauty of the bright red blooms that emerged from the graves of his fellow soldiers.
But it was a Georgia teacher named Monia Michael who began the tradition of wearing the red flower in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms.
She had read a copy of McCrae’s poem in Ladies Home Journal and then wrote her own poem that said:
Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
Those flowers became her torch. Millions of people, all across the world, have now worn paper poppies to honor the courage of servicemen and servicewomen.
We should all find our own way to carry on the torch of freedom.
May we never forget the lives of each solider; it is their blood that has kept us free. And it is their sacrifice that calls each of us to cherish the gift of liberty.
Please join me in pausing today to remember those who have fallen.
We are so grateful that our nation has warriors who defend and protect us from harm.
May God bless you, may God bless Texas, and may God bless the United States of America.
Sincerely,
Ted Cruz
United States Senator

We always hear that the next election will be the most important ever but, 2016 is the most important ever to restore the freedoms to Americans that the founding fathers established.
The current regime and it's policies is antithetical to freedom.
Ted Cruz is the only candidate with a real, articulate, constitutional vision for America and a return to our basic freedoms.
Thank you, TED CRUZ, for reminding Americans of the history of the red paper flowers which are distributed by Veterans in remembrance of those who gave their lives to protect our freedom.
He is right—Freedom is too important to wait for the next big election. We need to work on it today—this time—to show that freedom still lives in our hearts. How you ask?
If you have a creative gift—use it for Freedom. Write a poem about whats happening in IS lands? What is happening here in the USA. If you can paint—do a painting that shows freedom and her cause, If you do sculpture—do a statue of Freedom showing the struggle—a patriot at Lexington or Valley Forge, a fallen soldier on the beach at Normandy, a machine gunner on the USS Arizona who died at their station. A Marine in Iraq.
If you are a writer—do a story or book or novel about freedom and its burden. Film maker—make a movie about the trials we face—maybe a movie about Americans who join the Kurds in the fight—a battle as heroic as the men who came to Texas to hold the Alamo—and died there. If you can write a letter to your Local newspaper, or start a newspaper of your own—to show that not all MSM are leftist, Anti-Captalistic Progressives. Yes, and demonstrate! The cause of Freedom, like the Tea Party, may not be popular but the cause of Freedom will never go out of style. Its time to take the rattlesnake flag out of the closet one more time!
I’m sorry but even if Jesus Himself were to win the office, he would have NO (Constitutional) power (aside from the bully pulpit) to initiate a restoration of Life, Liberty and Freedom.
Has ANY of the GOP/RNC said they would welcome, let alone work-with anyone to reduce ANY dept/agency/regulation? The same leadership that has ‘officially backed’ O’Care, fast tracked the latest ‘free trade’ bill, given up their Treaty powers, etc.??
Nope, only a ConCon would allow We the People to bring about any restoration; anything else would require bloodshed that I don’t think most ‘mericans are willing to give; they sure does them some chains.
