For what it’s worth, if a little Muslim girl writes pleading that she should be allowed to marry who she wants, she probably means she wants to pick her husband, and not be sold by her parents to some sixty-year old pederast who already has three wives.
That sounds like the proper context. One can certainly hope. But the mother with the “mind of her own” business is certainly not allowing the daughter to exhibit same.
