“From what I can tell, raping, robbing and killing.”

I bought 2 of my back up laptops from CL when I didn;t have that much dough back then. Got a used thermal printer which costs more than 125 average on AMZ or ebay and we paid $75 for it when I started my production company. Most people also use it to look for apartments and warehouses. Try advertising an apt building or studio space in the LA Times and you are out $75 for a 10 word small space while CL charges 7 days for a mere fraction. It has it’s uses and to make an idiotic general statement like that was ridiculous.

The “hundreds” is difficult to believe, but you made my point. Thank you.

You forget that scams, robberies and murders used to happen because of newspaper classifieds too. Craigslist is little different other than the medium and the cost.

Also, he’s not kidding. A six line ad in a major metropolitan paper can actually cost $400 and up.

Most get their news from The Daily Show and Spongebob Squarepants.

Craigslist makes all its revenue charging for property rental and help wanted ads in something like the 10 largest markets in the USA. That’s it.

Classic example of a business that could not adapt to technology.... just like sears and jc pennys were in the perfect position to create an online store like amazon, they waited... couldnt move fast enough, or ignored the threat... pennysaver was killed by craigslist. had the same function, (except casual encounters ) but just refused to adapt.

I looked at the CL personal ads... mostly it was queers trolling the lists posting pictures I wish I could unsee. Near me there is no such thing as a legit personal ad on CL.

The “hundreds” is difficult to believe,

Difficult or not, I would not have said it if it were not true.

I took this from the San Diego Union-Tribune website moments. It took loss than a minute to find it. You could so the same if you care to confirm.

While centered in Brea, California, you really have to wonder if the brilliant minimum wage decision in Los Angeles was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

There had to be some cost component for operations in Los Angeles.

“there are no banners....no video advertising... No Commercial Links whatsoever!

How one could generate Income from a “commercial free” website is beyond me

maybe they secretly accept tips??”

I think that the adverts you place cost money to seller.

... The revenues generated from these fees cover only the operating expenses of Craigslist. The company has not made a profit since its inception. This is intentional -- Craigslist president Jim Buckmaster has stated that creating a superior user experience is more important to the company than making money.

Of course, Mr. Buckmaster's salary, draw, expenses, and per diem are all elements of that "operating expense".
I expect I could deal with that.

OK, you still made my point. In a newsPAPER, there are no additions on a website or a mobile platform. You are right, it costs a lot but it is technically not a newspaper in the print format only. The newspapers have seen the “writing on the wall” and have diversified online and in other aspects. Still, to see the LA Slime and the New York Slime disappear brings joy to my heart. The Chandlers saw the wall writing and sold out—they were smart. Good old commie Pinch has been late for the sky and I hope he loses his ass holding out.

Even before they diversified, the ads cost that much. They only belatedly added the online and mobile sections after CL began eating their lunch - at no additional cost.

CL only charges for help wanted and for rent listings, and that in only 10 markets. In most areas, all ads are free.

I'm no fan of the dinosaur media and I'm as happy as anyone to see them fail.

Ironically, this was in the news recently.
