KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine Jeb Bush, who has a longtime relationship with this seaside town where generations of Bushes have vacationed, is having a house built for him at the family compound on Walkers Point, with a wraparound porch and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The home, on a 1.3-acre site assessed by the town at $1.4 million, was initiated for him by his mother and father, who have tried to preserve the family ties to the picturesque property.
But as he tries to appeal to middle-class Americans in his likely Republican presidential campaign and distinguish himself as his own man, distinct from the legacies of his father and brother having a vacation home erected on a spit of land in coastal Maine could be a vivid reminder of the complications facing his campaign.
Already, his opponents are emphasizing his last name and the old-money New England clan that helped build the Republican Party establishment as a way to highlight a brand that has fallen out of favor with the newly empowered, anti-elite activists who may have an outsized voice in choosing the next Republican nominee.

Two hundred dollars a square foot for construction. Gilded railings?
Jeb will never be Walker’s Point Man. ;)
I see what you did there...
Will there be a memorial to Terri Schaivo on the property? How about just a Memory Bench with ‘expansive’ views of the ocean?
Jerk.

Brilliant, like your picture the optics of doing this now are askew. Doing this during this run will have the wealth re-distributors screaming about their riches and silver spoons. Another straw on the Camels back to say this isn’t the guy.....
amen
when the hurricane hits Kill Devil Hills there will be vinyl siding scattered inland all over eastern North Carolina
If you want to go after Jeb Bush (and I can't stand the man) do so on the merits.
Otherwise, you sound just like the Democrats, trashing only those of whom you disapprove for their wealth.
Unfortunately, for custom construction in a relatively remote area with relatively high costs locally, $200 / s.f. isn't all that pricey. I've been following Fine Homebuilding magazine since it began publication in the late 70s, and they always list $/s.f. on their featured houses. $185 and up is typical.
And if he can afford it and likes it, why the heck not? We intend to build when we retire, and even in the South and doing much of our own finish work, I expect something north of $100 per.
Just keep Diggin, Jebby.
Thought of something else. The smaller the house, the higher your s.f. cost. Kitchen and bath are expensive, plus physical plant (HVAC, plumbing) whether you have 2br or 8.
I know one of the famous TV builders. He told me that he was working on a rehab job. I think he said it was $1500 a square foot. That’s over the top.
$1.4mm in a resort town is a modest cottage.
I don’t care about his wealth, I care about his political beliefs. I will not vote for him, not even while holding my nose, because of the latter.
In the end, we won't have to do anything. DBS is still alive and well. Hopefully Jeb is gone well before then.
It may be that the most effective tool to use against Jeb - the fact that his brother never lifted a finger to combat the slander of his and his family's name. All those years we spent in disgust at his lack of engagement to push back the filth spewed by the left? It may work out to our advantage after all by ensuring Jeb can't get past the primaries for the sheer amount of ridicule. The lefties simply cannot help themselves and won't wait for very long before they unleash their flying BDS monkies...
Personally, I don't see the harm if we help out.
When the Globe starts talking about Faukahantas I’ll pay attention. In the meantime, if you have the money, this is a good way to spend it.
If you want a nice Maine coast vacation skip Kennebunkport. It is way crazy overpriced and cutesy poo touristy. Yes we did have very good lobster there at a place that claimed the George Bush clan ate there too and iirc there were photos of them too. The place had a stainless steal sink right in the dining room with paper towels so you could wash up a bit from eating messy lobsters with butter etc.
I got the vibe that lots of the tourist oriented businesses (such as eateries and hotels) there (Kennebunkport) were gay owned. Go north to around Mt Desert Island or further north to relax and get into a more relaxing setting where the tourist oriented businesses are owned and run by regular folks..
Be ready to be flamed. But I totally agree with you.
Once a Bush, always a Bush. I voted for the two other Bushes given the alternatives were awful, however, I’ve never been a fan of country-club, plaid pants, elitist Republicans, and never will be. The Republican Party continues to falter, circling the bowl as it’s leaders try to ignore conservative, Christian, Constitution-abiding members of who many, unfortunately, out of principal, sit the the next election and let the commies win again. Not a pretty picture with an easy solution.
