WASHINGTON (AP) The National Security Agency has begun winding down its collection and storage of American phone records after the Senate failed to agree on a path forward to change or extend the once-secret program ahead of its expiration at the end of the month.
Barring an 11th hour compromise when the Senate returns to session May 31, a much-debated provision of the Patriot Act and some other lesser known surveillance tools will sunset at midnight that day. The change also would have a major impact on the FBI, which uses the Patriot Act and the other provisions to gather records in investigations of suspected spies and terrorists.
In a chaotic scene during the wee hours of Saturday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill known as the USA Freedom Act, which would have ended the NSA's bulk collection but preserved its ability to search the records held by the phone companies on a case-by-case basis. The bill was backed by President Barack Obama, House Republicans and the nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials.

And they believe the Towers were done by Osama, right?
I was one of those awful people for 33 years, and like our Marines, I’ve served in every clime and place, from Vietnam to Panama to Iran for the Agency. My daughter deployed to Afghanistan three times. We’re getting rather tired of being called criminals.
No, you were not. No, you are not.
I understand your frustration and thank you and your daughter for your service. The lack of respect and downright abuse heaped on law enforcement, the military and the intelligence community that supports, them has grown alarmingly. Our society is growing more ignorant and paranoid by the day.
Of course, they jump on the bandwagon of sensationalists like Snowden who have books to sell and their own political agenda. Snowden was obsessed with personal privacy, and was paranoid that his sexual activities might come under scrutinty. For personnal and political reasons, as well as financial gain, he has alarmed millions of people by misrepresenting programs that knowledgeable people are not allowed to discuss, even to correct those misconceptions. Snowden is a traitor, yet those praising him do not even stop to wonder why he chose to flee to Russia.
With all due respect, you know nothing about my children or the dangerous conditions they are working in while on assignment in another country.
Edward Snowden has his own personal agenda. He has misrepresented the way that the programs he identified are used, yet those with that knowledge are not allowed to correct those misconceptions, because to do so would further compromise security.
Snowden was extremely paranoid about some of his sexual behavior being known. He is viewed in the intelligence community as being unstable and a traitor. He didn’t flee to Russia by chance.
Thank you, my friend.
Thanks for your understanding, CJ.
