NSA winds down once-secret phone-records collection program

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Security Agency has begun winding down its collection and storage of American phone records after the Senate failed to agree on a path forward to change or extend the once-secret program ahead of its expiration at the end of the month.

Barring an 11th hour compromise when the Senate returns to session May 31, a much-debated provision of the Patriot Act — and some other lesser known surveillance tools — will sunset at midnight that day. The change also would have a major impact on the FBI, which uses the Patriot Act and the other provisions to gather records in investigations of suspected spies and terrorists.

In a chaotic scene during the wee hours of Saturday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill known as the USA Freedom Act, which would have ended the NSA's bulk collection but preserved its ability to search the records held by the phone companies on a case-by-case basis. The bill was backed by President Barack Obama, House Republicans and the nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials.

Just as a caution, a common arrangement between governments foreign to one another is mutual spying. The British could be giving away our freedom in a way they never could in 1776.

Operation Net Neutrality rules go into effect June 12, 2015. Expect right wing websites to experience disruptions and increased monoitoring from that day forward

“People are going to have to understand that Barak Obama is building a database on EVERYONE, bigger than the world has ever seen, and that’s going to be a very useful tool in his hands..”

Obamacare was supposed to be a huge part if that data collection process and there weren’t enough dummies to fall for it so they went with the Net Neutrality angke to build a better system that would collect all the data without the public being aware of it

It’s really dismaying to read the amount of paranoia that has been inspired by the Patriot Act. My husband retired from Federal law enforcement in 2007. We still have a lot of friends in intelligence gathering agencies. Our granddaughter and her husband work in intelligence gathering and are currently on assignment in another country. It is appalling to them and our friends that so many think that they spend their days mining information on everyday citizens. They have neither the time, resources, nor the inclination to do that. They have the huge task of tracking those who are known threats to our security.

All of our friends in that community are Conservatives, and many of them like my husband and I, vote Tea Party. Those we’ve talked to recently support the USA Freedom Act. They support that because it does limit information gathering to court approved data gathering. They don’t mind that step because it preserves privacy and they don’t waste their time looking at information that they don’t have probable cause to search anyway.

A lot of this distrust can be laid at the feet of this administration. It is hard to trust when we know what we have in the White House, but to blame the intelligence community is misguided. Many of those folks are former military and I don’t know any who aren’t Patriots.

My distrust for our government predates Obama by decades. The government has never been on your side, will never be on your side, and should never be trusted under any circumstances. There’s a reason the first half of the Bill of Rights is a blueprint on how to overthrow a government, that’s how little the guys that MADE our government thought it should be trusted.
