NSA winds down once-secret phone-records collection program

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Security Agency has begun winding down its collection and storage of American phone records after the Senate failed to agree on a path forward to change or extend the once-secret program ahead of its expiration at the end of the month.

Barring an 11th hour compromise when the Senate returns to session May 31, a much-debated provision of the Patriot Act — and some other lesser known surveillance tools — will sunset at midnight that day. The change also would have a major impact on the FBI, which uses the Patriot Act and the other provisions to gather records in investigations of suspected spies and terrorists.

In a chaotic scene during the wee hours of Saturday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill known as the USA Freedom Act, which would have ended the NSA's bulk collection but preserved its ability to search the records held by the phone companies on a case-by-case basis. The bill was backed by President Barack Obama, House Republicans and the nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials.

" It is appalling to them and our friends that so many think that they spend their days mining information on everyday citizens. They have neither the time, resources, nor the inclination to do that. They have the huge task of tracking those who are known threats to our security.

I'm going to be gentle here, Honey.

What you posted is Bullshyte.

They DO have the "time, resources, and the inclination to do that."

Why have that monstrous data collection site in Utah unless they want to catalogue every E-mail, phone conversation, text, Instagram or whatever anyone puts up on the Web.

Do you think they don't have every electronic missive ever posted by Ted Cruz?

They do. And they will put them out as soon as it will scuttle him, if it suits TPTB's purposes.

Hope your kids see the light.

Who exactly do you think “the government” is? Do you mean people like my granddaughter and her husband who are assigned to a dangerous part of the world working to keep us safe? Do you mean my Marine son who died in Iraq? Are you talking about my husband who put his life in danger each day that he worked to enforce our laws? Who exactly???
Mind sharing your sacrifices for this country?

Every “electronic missive’ ever posted by anyone is stored somewhere. We gave up our privacy when we put all of our information on computers, medical records, banking records, credit card purchases, google searches. It is already stored. People are at more of a security risk from rogue hackers and their own posts on facebook than anything else.

Don’t worry about my kids. They aren’t the ones wringing their hands in the darkness. They are working hard everyday to provide security to us, although there are a lot of folks who probably don’t deserve their sacrifice.

The whole thing. From the data gatherers, to the arresters, to the bureaucrats. Again, there’s a reason the founders felt the need to give us the tools to overthrow it. Never ever under any circumstances trust the government. Never let a cop in your home, never billet soldiers, don’t trust the NSA not to know EVERYTHING about you, and limit your exposure to paperwork.

That’s what my Marine mother and father taught me. The math is simple. The government at BEST considers you a nuisance and at worst considers you the enemy. Since it doesn’t trust you it’s only logic to not trust it.

You would have to be exceptionally naive to think that they haven’t been collecting the contents of all phone, email and other communications for years. They didn’t build that couple of million square feet mega server farm out West (Utah?) just for ID, routing, etc. information that could easily be stored on a couple of large servers at NSA.

Don’t let a cop in my home? I live with a former law enforcemnent officer. He’s my husband. My son was a Marine who died in Irag. I’d glady “billet” him if he was still on this earth.

In a republic, the government is US. It is what we make it. If you don’t like the status quo, and most of us don’t, it is our responsibility to change it.

Barring an 11th hour compromise when the Senate returns

He means an 11th hour capitulation in the kabuki dance known as the Senate. Which there will be unquestionably. This is a big dog and pony show, nothing more.

Which matters not anyway. For anyone that really thinks non-renewal of this legislative fascism is going to jettison NSA data collection, I suggest you get your medication increased. A lot.

Cry me a river, Missy.

They make about $87K a year sticking their noses in regular people's business.

Marines killed by Iranian EFPs in Fallujah "sacrificed".

Crossword solving booger eaters at NSA did not.

" My son was a Marine who died in Iraq."

Sorry to hear this. I thank him for his service and wish you well.

I just hope all of us get back to the principles our Republic was founded on.
