Squid, cuttlefish and octopuses are masters of camouflage, capable of changing their skin colors and patterns in the blink of an eye. And they may not even need their eyes to do it.
Two new studies, published this week in the Journal of Experimental Biology, find that cephalopod skin is chock-full of light-sensing cells typically found in eyes that help them "see." The cells likely send signals to alter skin coloration without involving the central nervous system, the researchers said.

Like a SQUID magnetometer...
Awwwwww, you just have to ‘ruin’ it for everybody.
Sarcasm aside, I would rate any cephalopods much higher than the Clintons.
I’m reading a book called The Brain that Changes Itself where the author talks about the plasticity of the brain. Evidently there are studies where someone without vision with their eyes can in fact be trained or their brain can be trained to “see” with their skin, not just by touching something but through some sort of waves. I don’t remember. I just had eye surgery, shouldn’t be using the internet and it hurts so I’m on pain meds. arrrgggg.
A recent Gallup poll shows Squidward leading Hillary 56% to 42% among registered marine life ;)
I’d wager that all camouflaging animals, such as flounders and chameleons, have something similar in their skins.
"THAT'S IT!!..no more trips to the beach so you could watch me toss sand for a few hours and then tell me those squiggling things don't bite"
Congrats on coming out!
Now bakeries will have to make squid cakes. (Wow. I didn't expect that to sound quite so nasty...)
Here is a recent study that shows the failure of this squid when placed in a different environment. Clearly, the coloration did not adapt...
It is also theorized that the potato can see without its skin. It may be that the potato does not want to be mistaken for calamari.
The studies must continue. We are looking for volunteers.
If they see so well with their skin, how do they end up crispy-fried and served on a plate with cocktail sauce?
