Obamacare May Force Some Insurers to Boost Their Premiums an Alarming Amount
Slate ^ | May 22, 2015 | Mark Joseph Stern

Posted on 05/22/2015 10:48:33 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

On the whole, the Affordable Care Act is working pretty well, getting more people insured and increasing the quality of insurance overall. But on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported an alarming development: Health insurers on many state exchanges are looking to boost their premiums a ridiculous amount in 2016. New Mexico's leading provider, for instance, is seeking a 51.6 percent hike, while Maryland's is seeking a 30.4 percent hike. (Insurers in other states, like Vermont and Indiana, are asking for minimal increases.)

Libertarian and conservative outlets are, predictably, citing the rate hike as yet another Obamacare catastrophe. But it's actually a fairly foreseeable—and possibly temporary—problem. The ACA forced a bunch of uninsured people to get insurance. A hefty amount of these newly insured people were sick when they joined their new plan. Suddenly able to afford treatment, these sick people drained insurers' funds. But as they regain their health and remain on their plan, they'll stop draining their insurers' resources and start boosting them instead...

and they have to be kidding me in this article. Already I can not get an endoscopy even though I have Barrett’s esophagus and it is 2 years since the last one because my insurance policy only covers 70% of everything and it would cost me thousands and thousands. Obama’s death panel is working wonders already.next year I will probably have to pay 400 a month to get a carrier that will cover those procedures 100%.

Thanks for the laugh, Slate.

If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.

Wait. What.

You’d have to be stone ignorant of economics, human nature and history to write a statement as comical as that.

that could be the stupidest thing I’ve read in years lol. As they regain their health?and they will be magically cured and need no treatment anymore? What exactly do they have?

Mine went up 60% already after this stupid “tax” passed, and I have the most socialistic insurance company, Kaiser. Its paid for mostly through work but way cheaper if I tried to get insurance on my own so I’m kinda stuck with it.

“Obamacare May Force Some Insurers to Boost Their Premiums an Alarming Amount”

Slate sure is slow on the draw.

Has anyone informed them yet of the surrender of Japan?

Exactly. The trend he admits to seeing will not be getting smaller (he’s dreaming) it will be permanent and larger. One example would be a diabetes patient who is able to get on Obama care. His-her drain on the insurers mentioned here will not be getting less. It will slowly get greater

BTW diabetes is way up there as far as drains on Medicare and Medicaid. 50% (my guess) of these diabetes cases are created by years of excessive junk food. You see that 300lb woman ahead of you using her EBT card to buy junk food, grape soda, Cheetos, lobster and shrimp. She is mostly likely per-diabetic

If it's been his plan all along to become a martyr, he's running out of time to do himself.

Mark Joseph Stern is a writer for Slate. He covers science, the law, and LGBTQ issues.

Makes sense. Bammycare was passed to cover the uninsured, irresponsible HIV queers at $250k per year, along with the pure socialist agenda.
