The cause of civil unrest in Syria is the US training thousands of insurgents (IE terrorists) arming them and funding them and sending them out to kill Syrian Troops. The blowback from this is, ISIS became powerful and now ISIS is roaming freely everywhere because we weakened the only force in the world that was keeping them at bay.
