Full title: Udder lunacy: Candlelit vigil planned after police scramble dozens of officers, 20 vehicles, a helicopter and SIX marksmen...to gun down one bewildered cow ambling along the street
Dozens of police, six snipers and helicopter gave chase to an escaped cow
It had gone on run with two others from a country park in North Tyneside
Police caught two but shot Bessie dead - claiming she posed risk to public
But use of force has angered onlookers, who plan to hold a candlelit vigil
Cornered by dozens of police officers, a helicopter, 20 squad vehicles and six snipers, the villain had nowhere left to run.
And with a single shot to the head the dramatic cross-country chase came to a deadly conclusion.
But the target in the police riflemens sights was not an escaped killer it was Bessie the cow.
'Cruel and utterly pointless': Bessie the cow (pictured) was shot dead after being cornered by dozens of policemen, a helicopter, 20 squad vehicles and six snipers. She had escaped from a country park on Sunday
Locals are so upset at her unhappy end that they are planning a candlelit vigil tomorrow to remember her with 7,000 people 'liking' the event on Facebook.
Onlookers say trigger-happy police should have tranquilised the animal instead, claiming it was peacefully chewing the cud when it was gunned down.
Bessie was among three cows to bolt from a country park after being spooked by a dog.

No need for all that.
Guess that is a good definition for OVERKILL....
Reminds me of a few years ago a local Northern Virginia Police Dept came upon a deer which was ‘ambulatory’ after being hit by a car on a busy highway. Apparently 3 or 4 Officers were dispatched and SEVERAL ATTEMPTS were made to put the deer out of its misery...shot it in head (FAIL), ran over it with a cruiser(FAIL) and eventually tied a bag around its head and the deer suffocated.....
A Sgt was also involved.. NOT a good endorsement for LEOs.
Well, they are getting worse.
The last one that was notable was the 47 bobbies required to pick up a .22 lr round laying in the gutter.
Hard to believe that country had an empire that included 1/4 of the world. They have really gone South.
Not one cowboy with a lariat in the bunch. Sad.
The cow was a known gangbanger....
Poor Bessie. My Dad taught us boys how to handle this situation easily. A bucket with a little grain in it worked wonders.
Maybe Scotland Yard identified the cow as a member of ISIS and ordered the extra firepower. Six snipers as part of a team going after a COW! Really?
If worse came to worse, and the cow was too spooked to lead - what about tranquilizer dart? Why kill it?
Well it was wearing a leather jacket
“Where I live any 12 year old farm kid could have handled the situation alone”
No kidding. Its a domesticated animal, note a wild wolf. Keep it occupied with food and wait for the trailer.
It’s a killer! Look a’ the bones, man! The boooooones!
The sound of the scoop in the food bin had amazing power on our farm.
What a passel of jerks. Poor cow!
Five years ago a cow got loose at the fair in Sacramento. The police chased it, firing from moving vehicles, shot it several times, and eventually killed it.
