NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Starting Thursday, the armed security guard at Panera Bread Co. across from Vanderbilt University will no longer be carrying a firearm.

According to the manager at the 21st Avenue location, the decision comes after multiple patrons complained to corporate that the armed security agent was violating the company’s own gun policy and making them uncomfortable.

One of those who complained was Lillian Hallstrand, a long-time customer of the Panera on 21st.

The Director of Stewardship and Vocational Planning at Vanderbilt’s divinity school told news 2 coming to the restaurant in recent months has been unsettling since the guards began to carry firearms.

“It was definitely alarming,” Hallstrand explained. “Typically when I see people around with guns, I assume there is some sort of law enforcement happenings taking place. I was reluctant to go in till I knew that there was nothing going on.”

I don’t think I’d go to a restaurant that felt the need for armed guards. That just screams “crappy neighborhood, get out while you can” to me.

From what I’ve read and heard, being hunted and shot by a lunatic can also make diners “uncomfortable”.

I was in Panera not too long ago with my Ruger concealed on my hip, unaware of this policy. I guess that won’t happen again.

The Panera across from Virginia Tech doesn’t even have a security guard.

I carry my concealed weapon into my local Panera every time I go there. There’s nothing indicating its not welcome.

Perhaps someone can enlighten Lillian about Luby’s in Killeen, TX and what took place there in 1991. Even one alert armed guard might have prevented the massacre. Along with Suzanna Hupp, who was dining with her parents when the shooting broke out. Lillian could learn that Suzanna had left her gun in the car as per the rules, and both her parents were killed along with many others. Perhaps crazy people who kill others should make her as nervous as being traumatized by seeing a guard with a gun. So if the place gets shot up, wonder who will be in line to sue if an injury or death occurs?

"multiple patrons complained to corporate that the armed security agent was violating the company’s own gun policy..."

Isn't that just like a liberal. Tell the peons they can't have guns for self defense while hiring armed security to protect themselves. I think it's good that they are made to play by their own rules.
