I’m so horrified by this crime it’s beyond belief. It’s like that crime in Connecticut a few years ago where they set the house on fire and killed 2 young girls along with their mother. The father barely made it out alive.

Probably to extract information from one of the adults. If the torturer slips and kills the child, the information source (the adult) is still alive. For most parents, it would be more difficult to watch their child tortured than to be the direct object of such attention.
