Oregon to test pay-per-mile idea as replacement for gas tax

Oregon is about to embark on a first-in-the-nation program that aims to charge car owners not for the fuel they use, but for the miles they drive. The program is meant to help the state raise more revenue to pay for road and bridge projects at a time when money generated from gasoline taxes are declining across the country, in part, because of greater fuel efficiency and the increasing popularity of fuel-efficient, hybrid and electric cars.

Starting July 1, up to 5,000 volunteers in Oregon can sign up to drive with devices that collect data on how much they have driven and where. The volunteers will agree to pay 1.5 cents for each mile traveled on public roads within Oregon, instead of the tax now added when filling up at the pump.

REBEL. I will absolutely rebel against this, if it comes to my state, with armed civil disobedience if necessary. There is NO REASON for any government to have this data, except to take freedom.

They will make every effort to make it so miserable if you don’t pay that everyone will end up paying. Unless you literally want to live in the woods or leave the country, I think this will just become another annual norm that we pay in addition to car registration and property taxes and house insurance. It will just get added to the mountain of bills we already have.

There's only one way to charge per mile instead of hiding the money in a gas tax. You have to send a bill. No one, moonbats included want to write checks to the government. How about getting rid of the withholding in workers paychecks and making all taxpayers pay their taxes quarterly like the self employed ? There would be a revolution in this country when workers realize how they're being screwed when they have to write checks. This is BS.

Judges, politicians, political operatives, staffers, cops, and municipal bigwigs exempt of course.

The first rule in bad legislation is to exempt yourself and your peers from said legislation.

Doesn’t anybody fight anything anymore? Do Americans just lay down, think of England, and let the socialists have their way with them?

I moved home to Oregon from Arizona in January, got my Oregon drivers license back, and was asked if I wanted to register to vote, which I declined. 2 months later they were automatically going to start registering everyone with a license. That pissed me off enough to move to Colorado. I haven’t gone in yet for my Colorado license and am curious as to whether I am an unwilling Republican or a Demo-Commie. The a-hole politicians in Oregon have really screwed up what was once a half-way decent state to reside in.
