As we all know the term was first used in the 60’s to describe some of the people that attended the motorcycle events back then.

Actually it goes back to the 1947 so called "Hollister riot", which was minor event that was exaggerated and sensationalized by the media. The spokesman for the AMA claimed all the trouble was caused by the 1% who were troublemakers. Bikers being bikers everyone wanted to be a badass 1 percenter.
