Shoppers could soon have a harder time finding out where their red meat comes from.
The World Trade Organization ruled Monday that the U.S. "country of origin" labels put Canadian and Mexican livestock at a disadvantage. The current labels say where the animals were born, raised and slaughtered.
The Obama administration has already revised the labels once to try to comply with previous WTO rulings in favor of Canada and Mexico. Since those efforts didn't work, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says Congress will have to weigh in to avoid retaliation such as extra tariffs from the two neighbor countries.

Canada and Mexico will accelerate the tariffs,quotas,etc... and our farmers end up getting hurt quite badly. Best to not have food of origin labeling handed out by govt. Private sector labeling is what needs to happen.

No. They’re produced here for US market, but Chi-comm purchase gave Smithfield entry into world’s largest pork market. US company can’t be owner of company doing business there; must be Chi-comm-majority owned.

To some degree it seems to be. Smithfield announced a plan to ship carcasses to China for processing-—then ship them back to sell. But that was the point in the sale: The Chicoms produce excess pork so they now have a way to put a US domestic label on it. In my view eating Smithfield anything would be a convenient way to increase your intake of lead, melamine, formaldehyde, cadmium or make up your own list of nastyass commie by-products. Remember how they were killing dogs with contaminated krap?
I don’t buy any more of their products, either. They didn’t need to totally sell-out to gain access to the Asian markets. A lot of companies have expanded into China without selling the whole company.
Yeah ... I knew the PLA had bought Smithfield. Wasn’t sure about CoO of the meat. I still avoid them ... no sense giving money to the PLA. Plenty of USA companies to do business with. Tyson ... headquarters in Arkansas, traded on NYSE ... better.

we should drop all pretence of trying to work in the WTO. and dare them to do what they want and pass a bill applying tariffs to all countries that slap on tariffs on are goods. I think knowing where are food is coming from is important. and yes I would discriminate on where I got my beef from.

Given all the off shore manufacturing of vehicles, appliances, etc. that are sold in America, right back at ya! In case you have the urge to, don't complain about the loss of manfacturing jobs in the US. "Maybe they ought to step up their quality?" Interesting that dog food should come up because I was trying to find a better feed for my dog. “Good old American” Purina is being sued all over the place for what they put in their dog food(s). They buy some of thelr “fillers and additives” from China. Looks as though “first they came for our pets, then they came for us!”

I really like Orijen/Acana. It’s a Canadian brand. It is super expensive, but I haven’t found anything that can touch the quality.
I do not believe that “country of origin” labeling puts Canadian producers at a disadvantage.
