NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas New Braunfels ISD responded Friday to a complaint from parents of a student at Carl Schurz Elementary School being in a "FOCUS room."
A website, called "The 'Focus Room' Horror" and dated May 13, shows photos of a visibly upset boy sitting on the floor of a room. The website writes that the boy is a 9-year-old student named Alex and states that he was confined to the room for more than an hour.
According to the website, Alex was told to sit in a circle drawn on the floor for 90 minutes "to earn 90 minutes in the classroom."
The website's author wrote a synopsis of Alex's conversation with his parents that evening. The site states Alex's mother was taken to that room after she was "denied five times by the vice principle [sic]." Alex reportedly told his parents the room is called the "focus room," and it's "where bad children go and serve their in-school suspension." According to the website, Alex told his parents he has been confined to the room nearly every day, that it's very cold and that "sometimes they shout at me and say rude things." Alex reportedly said students are not allowed to go to the bathroom, have snacks or get exercise.
The district sent a letter to parents at the school clarifying the district's punishment procedures.
"You may hear the term 'FOCUS Room' or 'Safe Room.' These are two different environments. A 'FOCUS Room' is a classroom environment that allows for behavior intervention such as social skills and counseling. A 'Safe Room' is used in times when a child is a danger to himself/herself or others," said the letter.
New Braunfels ISD said it is not sure who created the website. A NBISD spokesperson said FOCUS rooms or safe rooms are in many schools, used as a safe place during emotional outbursts or as a "timeout."
we’re dying to know
Oh boo hoo. A few swats with a paddle would probably help little precious to focus a lot better. It did for me.
New Braunfels is German! Brown shirts in the ISD? “Ve have veys of making your kid behave! Ve just subjekt him to mental abuse!”
First the anti-American “Comprehensive”SD in SC messing with the flags on the student’s truck today, and now this. Someone please tell me if there are any people in the education “system” that give a $hit about the children?
“as that whatever it was with all those holes drilled in it hit my skinny but.”
Ah yes, the old “Board of Education” ! ;)
Our elementary school has a “rubber room” padded with mats where violent disruptive kids are sent.......
The East German STASI used to have rooms like that.
My dad’s kindergarten teacher used to lock him in a dark closet in the 1940s for his childish transgressions and he’s still pissed off about it.
Teachers are lazy and stupid
Yes, they are called "parents". Some of us don't want to see students who are continually disruptive, interfering with our child's education (or even lunch).
The web post was apparently written by the kid's parents. They said: "Alex told his parents he has been confined to the room nearly every day". If that's true, he probably should be in a special education environment, not a normal classroom.
BTW, New Braunfels was settled by German immigrants a century and a half ago. We are Texans, now.
“A paddle is cheaper, delivers more for the bang of the buck, and goes directly to the problem.”
You are partly right: However, it goes directly to the SEAT of the problem.
LoL!
Your comment is stupid.
Their hands are tied. If they so much as touch a student, parents will sue them and the school. Thanks to all the liberal control of the public schools these kids with constant bad behavoir get worse because proper deterrants can't be used (i.e., wooden paddle).
They don’t need to touch them except touch their minds with intriguing instruction instead of being stupid and lazy
My wife is a teacher. Teachers (mostly) are not the problem. Government intrusion and administration are the problems. The topic here is disruptive kids, not education. And in that regard, their hands are tied. There is no pumishment that can help that will not draw a lawsuit. If this kid has been in that closet almost every day, then I’d say he’s a problem child. The school needs to sit down with his parents and discuss the matter.
I will assume your wife is the exception that proves the rule
“Its because weve lost male authority in the schools. Almost all of the teachers are women and they can NOT hold the line as well as men.
I know I struggled with my two when my husband was deployed. And Im no pushover.
Ive been saying for years that we need to segregate the sexes and have men teach the boys and women teach the girls - with male authority in the hallways. Every single study and experiment proves that boys do much better without women running their education.”
TRUE! Raised two boys myself. Also, what Einstein decided to give women the right to vote? That was a poor decision. By-and-large, women are lovely, nurturing individuals that put a high value on safety and security therefore they vote in that vein. Safety and security in the home comes from a strong husband, not the government.
I used to say “Parents”. Now it’s single mom.
“Yes, they are called “parents”. Some of us don’t want to see students who are continually disruptive, interfering with our child’s education (or even lunch).”
So if your kid acts up, you’re o.k. with him or her receiving this kind of treatment is that right? Why your a “real Texan.” Texas, where teachers can hit your kids and it’s legal. Not Germans, but rather Neanderthals.
BTW, I’ve been to both Braunfels (where there are “real” Germans) and New Braunfels (Seguin too), and there are still Germans there, hence the joke.
Yup.
I was speaking with a woman who was bragging that she whupped her boys’ butts and kept them in line.
I said, “Me too. The funny thing is, my husband could keep my kids in line without so much effort. They just didn’t misbehave when daddy was around.”
It takes a very strong woman to accomplish what a man can do with his presence alone.
My nephew says he never got detention last year. So he doesn’t know.
lol.
Good boy! lol!
