CHRIS MATTHEWS: REPUBLICANS ‘TREAT TRAINS LIKE HISPANICS
Breitbart ^ | 05/15/2015 | AN HANCHETT

Posted on 05/15/2015 4:07:55 PM PDT by Kid Shelleen

MSNBC’s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews said that Republicans “treat trains like Hispanics” on Thursday.

Matthews argued that AMTRAK could “unite this country. It wouldn’t be flyover country, it would be one country again. Rail could bring us together. Culturally, it would be the greatest thing. St. Louis would boom, Cincinnati, all those train stops, all those rail heads would be back in business big-time, if we were united by rail, instead of flyover, looking down on the people, the everyday people.”

I'd love to take the train for trips.

Problem is they stop at every other town and your time of travel is tripled. No thanks.

I’ve taken the train from Syracuse to Richmond a few times. No complaints. The cars were clean & bathrooms were clean, The 2 hour layover in NYC was not fun considering I had baggage and my then 6 year old son with me.

Compare that to the one & only time I took the train from Atlanta to DC. Nasty Nasty Nasty. Never again.

I wanted to take a train from Austin to Colorado springs a couple years ago. I figured I’d get a couple of days of nice relaxing boredom on the train.

Then I found out that not only can’t you get there from here, but that flying was cheaper than the train!

So much for boring personal anecdotes...

Back in the days of Steamboat Willie, I did an Internet study of the profitability of passenger rail travel.

Rendered down, passenger rail has NEVER been self supporting. The US passenger system has always been a red-headed stepchild, supported by the US government. Until the 1950's, intercity rail always had a mail car that would pick up bagged mail, with a crew that would manually sort and deliver while in motion. (Remember Bugs Bunny and the mail bags?)

After the USPS went to the zipcode system, with central computer sorting, and mail cars vanished, passenger rail was that close to going the way of ice wagons and Howdy Doody.

Then came Amtrak. Passenger rail costs have quadrupled and service is worse.

Chris is getting more neurotic thinking about the coitus interruptus he will experience in about 18 months.

Some routes are self-supporting.

I suspect Willie Green has donned a Chris Matthews mask and is hosting the show . . .
