Almost a third of Russians fear an invasion and occupation of their country by the United States, a new poll indicates.
The respected Levada Centre polling agency in Moscow found that 31 per cent of respondents in a survey conducted last month thought the US represented a threat of military takeover, up from 21 per cent in 2007.
The poll also found that 48 per cent of respondents believed the US wanted to “create obstacles to Russia’s development” and 40 per cent believed Washington wanted to establish control over the Russian economy.
Asked who would win if there was a war between Russia and the United States and/or the Nato countries, 33 per cent said Russia, 5 per cent said the US/Nato and 52 per cent agreed with the statement, “in such a war there can be no winners”.
Patriotic sentiment was running high last month in the run-up to celebrations in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
State television repeatedly tells viewers that the US is intent on surrounding and subjugating Russia, which identified Nato expansion as a key external threat to the country when it revised its military doctrine in December.

Some of this is ingrained in the Russian mindset. After centuries of being continually invaded, including most recently a very brutal Nazi invasion, most Russians are just conditioned to expect the next one.
That being said....what makes you guys think that WE WOULD BE INSANE ENOUGH TO INVADE RUSSIA? You guys being a top-level nuclear power and all? Witness how our limp-wristed Left freaked out when we invaded Iraq, a pipsqueak country, with historically low casualties. You think they’re gonna sit by calmly for World War III? And besides, don’t we have enough problems already? We’ve got enough to deal without adding rampant alcoholism and failed agriculture to the mix, thank you.
Even more likely by the Chinese, whose population would make good use of all Siberia's resources.
With the commie we have in there now, they should be thrilled.
From the rhetoric on some threads, I don’t blame them. What they need to understand is that that is a vocal minority. I think there is enough sanity left in the majority to safely say we wouldn’t do it first.

So Russia is invading Ukraine, which moves their Army right up to NATO’s borders as they threaten NATO nations with flyovers and naval acts, and it is NATO threatening Russia?
What is Europe threatening Russia with, continuing to defend itself from being conquered?

Including centuries of Russian invasions and annexations of foreign territory. Russia is almost twice the size of the next largest country on earth because it has been an aggressive acquirer, by force, of neighboring lands for most of its existence - a habit that has tapered off a little in the face of the nuclear age.
