Vocativ mapped out incidents where cops were killed by another person from January 1, 2014 to May 12, 2015, finding at least 102 murders.
Meanwhile, in the same time period, Vocativ found nearly 1,500 incidents where people were killed by the police:

The rest of the story is how many non cops are killing each other and innocent victims.
That and the number of suicide cases using cops as their tool of choice.
You can avoid being killed by police if you just honk at them.
Then, they'll only break your nose, and bash your teeth out with their gun.
And then you'll get your car searched by the other cops...
Detroit cops kill 1 or 2 people per year on average. Even with the murder rate being way down, the locals kill each other at least 100 times more often.
Look I’m not happy with the militarization of the cops, but the 102 vs the cop population doesn’t equate tot he 15k vs the criminal population very well in my mind. What’s the non-criminal shoot #?
I believe the cops are overaggressive and no longer “peace officers”, but... let’s look at the true facts.... this story is trying to tell an incorrect story.
“Meanwhile, in the same time period, Vocativ found nearly 1,500 incidents where people were killed by the police:”
Out of 320,869,715+ people? Not bad. It’s probably
going to get a lot worse though.
One birth every 8 seconds
One death every 13 seconds
One international migrant (net) every 33 seconds
Net gain of one person every 13 seconds
“Whats the non-criminal shoot #?”
Depends on how you look at it. If you prescribe to the outdated idea that a person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, then most of the 1500 were probably innocent.
NEVER try too attack a Cop outside a Dunkin Donuts, ever.
Now, is this Thread going to end up like something we would see on DU or Daily Kos?
All Cops Bad, poor innocent “I din’t do nothin” Gibsmedats Good? I certainly hope not.
The guy the cop/fed killed in Detroit a week or so back attacked with a hammer too.
I agree! I usually hate statistics based on total numbers per year, based on the entire population.
Personally, I am sick to death of this crap from both sides.
Idiots who, by default, blame all shootings by cops on the cops.
Morons who blame, by default, all shootings by cops on the person shot.
There are times when it is pretty clear in both cases, but there is a large gray area where we out here on the Internet JUST CANNOT KNOW.
But no, we can’t leave it that way and let the facts come out. We have to make judgements and pronouncements.
I am sick to death of it. I can barely even enter some of these threads anymore.
Looks like we need Hammer Control and Amtrak Control.
I have known many Police Officers over the Years.
Salt of the Earth, Wife beaters and even my Buddy’s B-I-L who committed Insurance Fraud.
To a man they always had one thing in common, they all knew they were part of an exclusive Club.
They are like any other occupation, except for that being Armed Authority Figures thing. LOL
Bravo and dittoes!
The cop even forced the guy to sit in the Comfy Chair
Sigh. I admit to feeling somewhat discouraged.
It is difficult to have reasonable dialogue, and I have been as guilty as a lot of people at over-reacting and being uncivil, as hard as I try not to.
And it still makes me laugh when the first comment on a thread about a police encounter states the first thing required is for the non-police party to do is hide their dog, and so on.
I used to dislike cops at one time, then as I got older, I realized they weren’t all out to get me. If I minded my business, obeyed the law, and were polite in interactions with them, I wouldn’t have any trouble.
And I haven’t.
It doesn’t mean I have to kowtow to them or be a submissive sheep. But I have to recognize that most of them are doing a generally tough job, and I have to try to cut them some slack if I can, and treat them with courtesy if it is situationally possible.
Doesn’t mean there are bad cops out there, because there most certainly are. And I have always felt that, to some degree, the line between cops and criminals is sometimes a very fine one, and I don’t mean it in the way it sounds. I think there is some kind of odd commonality both ways. The other day, I was in a hospital and saw a guy in orange prison garb in manacles chained to a railing, with a cop standing there beside him. They were having the pleasantest time, both enjoying the conversation, and there was something that just struck me about it. It was so incongruous, but at the same time, so appropriate. I once read a book written by a cop who said somewhat matter-of-factly that he knew many cops who, if they hadn’t become cops, would probably have been criminals.
And while I agree that the police aren’t your friend, to me that means it isn’t their JOB to be your friend. They are there to do a job, and it is often a pretty crappy job. You see the seamy underbelly of human behavior, and it isn’t just the Walmart crowd who gets insane with them, it is “normal” people, because people get crazy.
So, I understand they aren’t my friends. But I also resist the urgings of many, even by some here on FR, who want to make them our enemy. I just don’t buy it, and I don’t think it is healthy, either personally for me or societally for all of us.
I wouldn’t want their job. No way.
