Sen. Cruz: Congress Must Prohibit Obama From Abusing TPA to Change Immigration Law (Files Amend.)
Ted Cruz ^ | 5/13/2015 | Ted Cruz

Posted on 05/13/2015 3:05:46 PM PDT by VinL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today filed an amendment to the Trade Act of 2015 to lock in assurances that this legislation cannot be used to change federal immigration law.

"The Obama Administration has repeatedly assured Members of Congress that there is nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 that would allow the President to unilaterally make changes to federal immigration laws. I agree, and we should put it in writing and make it binding law," said Sen. Cruz. "I am a strong supporter of free trade, but I cannot support legislation that would allow the President to once again circumvent Congress to enact his own immigration laws. Since the Obama Administration has emphatically argued that TPA will not affect immigration, it should support this amendment, which makes that promise explicit."

The amendment states that nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 or in any trade agreement subject to the Act "shall alter or affect any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration."

The amendment also states that any fast-track procedures shall not apply to any implementing bill submitted with respect to a trade agreement "that includes any provision that alters or affects any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration."

The text of the bill is available here.

Obama does whatever he feels like Ted. He makes his own laws out of thin air.

Looks like theater to me. A better idea might be to defeat fast track in the name of not buying a pig in a poke.

So Obama and the globalists can’t bankrupt an industry in a particular region in a Asian or Latin country sending a wave of illegals.

An amendment like this is needed. Because as it stands now it's the worse bill ever. And what about the UN overriding of U.S gun laws and the empowering Obama giving him fast track authority on trade. I think Congress and the people should vote on any trade deal and it should not be handled soley by an anti-American communist dictator named Obama

Here it is the TPP:

Worst bill ever imo:

The controversial TPP, of course, is disguised as a treaty to promote “free trade” — more properly described as managed or corporatist trade — among nations surrounding the Pacific. However, the TPP agreement, currently being negotiated behind closed doors by governments, dictatorships, and special interests, includes some major surprises. As The New American reported recently, a leaked chapter of the TPP deal would create NAFTA-style international “tribunals” with the purported authority to override American laws, courts, and even the U.S. and state constitutions — all for the benefit of special interests, foreigners, and crony capitalists. The American people and self-government would be the big losers.

Another chapter of the agreement making headlines this week, meanwhile, purports to regulate immigration policies among TPP signatories. “The Trans-Pacific Partnership includes an entire chapter on immigration,” observed Curtis Ellis, executive director of the American Jobs Alliance, in a post for The Hill. “It is a Trojan horse for Obama’s immigration agenda. House members who were ready to defund the Department of Homeland Security to stop President Obama’s executive action on immigration must not give him TPA, which he will use to ensure his immigration actions are locked in when he leaves office.”

Cruz is basically saying to Obama “Prove that you are not a traitorous liar.” Game, set to Cruz.

McConnell has already slipped the knife into America and revived the trade bill in the senate.

With real presidents, like Reagan, you knew the man’s word was his bond. You didn’t need to get it in writing.

With the usurper, even having it is written law does no good. Obama will do anything to grab more power, and not enough people in Congress are willing to stop him.

It doesn’t need an amendment. It needs a funeral. We are indeed screwed if even somebody like Cruz approves giving this political reprobate any more power than he already has.

Thank you, Vin for posting this.

Before seeing your thread, I've posted it in the thread below to counteract a bunch of people who came out of the woodwork to try to destroy Ted Cruz.

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been reading everything I can reference on TPA. This seems to be the biggest objection by those opposing, so hopefully, this amendment will be adopted. Cruz seems to be supporting this bill because of the importance of exports to the Texas economy. I have found a number of sources that have said that this bill does not give any power to the President that he doesn’t already have, it just makes the completion of trade deals faster. Congress still has full oversite and approval. These references also say that this does not in any way change immigration laws or the regulations concerning visas.

I don’t think it’s theater. Presumably, if Sen. Cruz doesn’t get a written assurance, he won’t vote for the bill.

That’s just it. All the references I’ve been able to find say that this bill does not give the President any more power than he already has, it just streamlines the process. No change in immigration law and full oversite by Congress.

It’s not just unrestricted immigration in the TPP. this is the worst bill ever:

The controversial TPP, of course, is disguised as a treaty to promote “free trade” — more properly described as managed or corporatist trade — among nations surrounding the Pacific. However, the TPP agreement, currently being negotiated behind closed doors by governments, dictatorships, and special interests, includes some major surprises. I agree. When it comes to policy, Cruz doesn’t do theater. I trust his judgement. He will have a full understanding of what this bill does and does not do before he votes.

If his effort fails he will just look ineffective, and he has a long track record of ineffective. We don’t need a president that nobody listens to, and that’s giving him credit for being sincere.

I’ve not that familiar with it, CJ. For me, the question is- do I trust the guy, or not? Even Scalia and Thomas, on some rare occasions, adopt a ruling that I disagree with. Throw them off the bench as bought off liberals??? - LOL

I trust Ted Cruz— I don’t expect I’ll agree with everything he does, but he’s a true Patriot-— and our last chance.
