The engineer driving the Amtrak train that derailed survived the Tuesday night crash will play a key role in the investigation into what happened.
The identity of the engineer has not been publicly released, but authorities said he has already met with investigators.
The train's engineer initially spoke with investigators Tuesday night. He was treated at a hospital and then released and transported to the Philadelphia Police Department. He later declined to provide a formal statement to police and requested a lawyer, which he now has.
ABC News can confirm that they were reportedly meeting with federal accident investigators and other rail personnel this afternoon.

I forwarded this article to my boy, who is an engineer on a Western railroad.

“It was either deliberate, or he fell asleep. I tend to think deliberate, since I’m pretty sure that Amtrak’s engines have “alerters” on them. Its an alarm that starts off as a flashing light, then turns to a light and audible alarm that gets louder and louder.
If you don’t hit a button to reset it, it will put the train into emergency braking automatically after about 15 seconds. Its designed to keep the engineer from accidently dozing off.
A couple of our engines have them, and they work..... ask me how I know :-)

Normally I think that the description of "crazy eyes" is very subjective. But it does appear that one of his eyes is looking at the camera and one isn't.
The vibe I get off this guy is that he’s just a selfish, apathetic douche. This can’t be the only time he drove the train like this.
I’m pretty sure trains have a dead man’s throttle, in other words you have to keep positive pressure on..so if it was going twice the posted speed limit it have to be a deliberate act
