Greenville, S.C. Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) signaled a new line of attack on Republican rivals, arguing that not all of his rivals defended religious liberty when Indiana passed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
Indiana was a sorting moment, as Reagan would say, a time for choosing, Cruz said at the South Carolina Freedom Summit. There are candidates running in 2016, even candidates in the Republican field, who when Indiana was being battled, they were nowhere to be found. I can tell you this, when it comes to standing for the religious liberty of Americans, I will always, always, always stand with the First Amendment.
Cruz refused to name the Republicans he had in mind, during a press availability following the speech, and insisted that he would take the high road during this campaign.
I do think its perfectly legitimate to focus on records, he said. Im a big believer in Ronald Reagans 11th Commandment, thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican. Now, to be clear, Reagan did not say thou shalt not have policy differences with another Republican. Remember, Reagan primaries Gerald Ford a sitting Republican president in 76 and almost beat him.
In before the Walker guys start attacking.
Oh wait, that’s right, it’s the Cruz Contingent that goes to Walker threads and starts attacking Walker.
Cruz has been remarkably gracious to other candidates, although he has not been given the same courtesy. He rises above the fray on substance and character. He was the clear favorite according to those quoted at yesterday’s Freedom Summit and according to all five S.C. straw polls.
The only so called republican I would never vote for is not running (Romney) - there may be others, I haven't finished sorting them out yet.
whispered slanders and rumor...
Ted, if you have a serious accusation to make bring it forward and stop hiding behind a quote from President Reagan.
[Its the Cruz Contingent that goes to Walker threads and starts attacking Walker.]
Give and take on candidate positions is a mainstay in American history. Somewhere along the line people have forgotten the art of discourse.
We have a duty, a responsibility to voice our approval and opposition to future leaders. To accuse those who have boned up on their candidate and can pick apart their opponents of “attacking” either means they have an inferior candidate or have not done their duty to effectively persuade others to their side.
Your pop up same ole, same ole schtick on multiple threads is tiresome.
Ted, if you have a serious accusation to make bring it forward and stop hiding behind a quote from President Reagan.Cruz will leave it for others to check the public record and determine which Republican candidates made statements about the Indiana and Arkansas confrontations against religious liberty by Democrats and big business.
Many will recall that Indiana's Governor Pence caved on the issue shortly after Cruz had issued his unambiguous statement of support shown below:
CRUZ: Im proud to stand with Gov. Mike Pence, and I urge Americans to do the same
03/30/15Issues Statement on Religious Freedom Restoration Act
HOUSTON, Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, issued the following statement today in support of Governor Mike Pences effort to defend religious liberty and protect against the government forcing individuals to violate their deeply held beliefs:
I want to commend Governor Mike Pence for his support of religious freedom, especially in the face of fierce opposition. There was a time, not too long ago, when defending religious liberty enjoyed strong bipartisan support. Alas, today we are facing a concerted assault on the First Amendment, on the right of every American to seek out and worship God according to the dictates of his or her conscience. Governor Pence is holding the line to protect religious liberty in the Hoosier State. Indiana is giving voice to millions of courageous conservatives across this country who are deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks upon our personal liberties. Im proud to stand with Mike, and I urge Americans to do the same.
He has learned the fine art of heaping hot coals of kindness on his rivals.
You mean pointing out his record? The problem with Walker people is that they simply REFUSE to admit that Walker has flipped on key issues...
“He has learned the fine art of heaping hot coals of kindness on his rivals”.
Excellent description!
I think we would all be better off if we would just talk up the candidate we back and refrain from taking shots at the others.
Telling the truth is not the same as taking shots.
Oh, please.
Same on every thread. CW marching orders? lol
My original point was that I do not think it is constructive to jump onto a thread about one candidate who is opposing a candidate I favor and make snarky comments. And I myself have been guilty of such, and I am trying to resist the temptation to continue to do so.
It is perfectly legitimate, however, to post actual refutation of a statement about a given candidate’s stand/policy on certain issues if one can supply references.
Far too often, we — including me — just make a nasty remark about the guy instead of outlining how or why he is wrong about this or that issue.
