50 years ago, the song 'Satisfaction' was born in Clearwater

he pool is still there. It's shrouded by palm fronds and heavy gates, but it's there. Stand on Pierce Street, beyond the walls of the Fort Harrison Hotel, and you can hear families splashing, even smell the chlorine.

Close your eyes and picture this pool a half-century ago. Picture the Rolling Stones, then a scrum of scrawny Brits in lounge chairs...

Depending on the legend you believe, it was here, 50 years ago while in town for a concert on May 6, 1965, that Keith Richards and Mick Jagger wrote (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. It's the Rolling Stones' signature song and one of the most enduring rock singles ever recorded.

Richards supposedly composed that one-of-a-kind riff while half asleep in his sixth-floor bed, and Jagger banged out those eyebrow-arching lyrics in 10 minutes by this very pool.

I'm still trying to file this under "Somethings to Give a $hit About." but can't find a reason.

Hero worship of the lowest or the low, worst of the worst.

How do you derive that from this post?

All I see is some fond recollections of a pop song from a time gone by. There's nothing "hero worship" about reminiscing.

Further, there's nothing wrong with conservatives appreciating rock music. You seem to perpetuate the old stereotype that conservatives are out of touch fuddy-duddies who listen to Anita Bryant records and insist on Elvis being filmed from the waist up.

For me, "Satisfaction" is not even in the top 20 best Rolling Stones songs. I'm more of a fan of the songs they put out in the 1970s. I was probably still in diapers when "Satisfaction" first hit the airwaves. So when I hear that song today, I think about the movie "Apocalypse Now" as that is how I remember the song contemporaneously.

Are we not men

Man that you are, you must come down from up there kingdom of men and tame the lowly beast. The savages may devour you and you will bleed for them. Was there ever any other way?

Yeah, with the Carpenters and Danny Partridge files so full, I can see your conundrum.

Just like real life.

“I’m still trying to file this under “Somethings to Give a $hit About.” but can’t find a reason.”

Yet you gave enough of one to post a comment about it.

In a different way, I suppose you could see it that way. Certainly the song did have meaning and was persuasive in ways other than just showing impeccable talent in musical taste.

“Popular music is like a candy bar. Sure, it’s of little nutritional value, but it can give a momentary burst of pleasure. Kept in that perspective, it’s an entertaining diversion. But if all you eat is candy, of course you will overvalue it.”

Yep.

And get sick.

And some candy is more unhealthy than others.

"persuasive in ways other than just showing impeccable talent in musical taste."

Perhaps it was just an expression of teenage obsession with sexual desire.

During the Super Bowl XL halftime show when the Stones were performing Satisfaction, a friend's daughter asked why those old guys were covering a Britney Spears song.

Yep, and lots of the younger set really like that Adele song Make You Feel My Love.

"What does the song mean?"

It doesn't MEAN anything lol

What does Revolution #9 mean besides the Beatles had to fill two albums to meet a contract requirement with Capitol Records?

Well, both responses are telling. The first one excuses the prude from intruding. The second one is ready money for the rapist that denudes rationality.

Here's more, from von Mises, with two bits for thinking it through again:

Man is not a being who cannot help yielding to the impulse that most urgently asks for satisfaction. Man is a being capable of subduing his instincts, emotions, and impulses; he can rationalize his behavior. He renounces the satisfaction of a burning impulse in order to satisfy other desires. He is not a puppet of his appetites. A man does not ravish every female that stirs his senses; he does not devour every piece of food that entices him;he does not knock down every fellow he would like to kill. He arranges his wishes and desires into a scale, he chooses; in short, he acts. What distinguishes man from beasts is precisely that he adjusts his behavior deliberatively. Man is the being that has inhibitions, that can master his impulses and desires, that has the power to suppress instinctive desires and impulses.
BTW, thanks for replying to my questions; I do mean that, sincerely. There are people today willing to riot because they need satisfaction. They will not deliberate.

My Mother loved Mick Jagger and that was before she knew that he and I shared the same Birthday, July 26th.

He has Ten Years and $300,000,000 on me.

The Stones have contributed to many unique riffs during the rock era that are unmistakable and attributable to the Stones alone. They are a great cover band. If Bobby Goldsboro hadn’t shown Richards the open tunings, much of his Telecaster rhythms would have never have been. The individual members of the Stones are students of music, Blues,Jazz, Country, Big Band, and Rock and have incorporated it into many of their songs. Like them or not, they have made a contribution to music, especially rock and roll.
