Attorney: Spy chief had 'forgotten' about NSA program when he misled Congress
The Hill ^ | 5/8/15 | Julian Hattem

Director of National Intelligence Jim Clapper wasn’t lying when he wrongly told Congress in 2013 that the government does not “wittingly” collect information about millions of Americans, according to his top lawyer.

He just forgot.

“This was not an untruth or a falsehood. This was just a mistake on his part,” Robert Litt, the general counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said during a panel discussion hosted by the Advisory Committee on Transparency on Friday.

“We all make mistakes.”

Gee Mr. Auditor, I forgot to include my salary on in my 1040 income. How far would that get me?

LOL. Its only a massive program that violates every principle of private communication we hold dear, of being secure in our papers and possessions, and of not recording people without their knowledge; upends the Constitution and decades of legal precedent; requires tens of billions of dollars to develop the infrastructure such as massive new data centers in Utah and other parts of the country to store the collected information. He “forgot” about all that. I guess he wasn’t in on any of the meetings where they discussed things like, oh, violating every principle of private communication we hold dear, being secure in our papers and possessions, not recording people without their knowledge, upending the Constitution and decades of legal precedent...

We need to get younger people into office, because all of these people seem to have Alzheimer’s Syndrome. One more reason not to vote for Clinton.

I ran out of gas.
I... I had a flat tire.
I didn’t have enough money for cab fare.
My tux didn’t come back from the cleaners.
An old friend came in from out of town.
Someone stole my car.
There was an earthquake.
A terrible flood. Locusts!
IT WASN’T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!

He must be lining up his next job / book deal.

I am reminded of a book by OJ Simpson called "If I did it."

Perhaps a working title for this new book could be "If I really didn't forget"......

That huge Budget and Head Count to collect metadata on millions of Americans? That illegal practice.
Oh yeah, forgot about that, my bad.
It’s like forgetting to pick up some bread on the way home

Very informative, Matt.

Is that the “Horst Wessel Lied” that is parodied?

Any, yet, THEIR practice is *STILL* (somehow) legal and ‘Constitutional’....my @ss.

So many violations of one’s Rights, but (miraculously) the 16th trumps all (yet, does not specially spell-out what it supposedly ‘trumps’)

Yet, the GOP does nothing and most did ‘vote the lesser’; so thank THEM.

Thanks.

BTW, last September, we were in Baltimore to celebrate the bicentennial of the writing of the “Star Spangled Banner”, so, of course, we included a visit to Fort McHenry. As we walked to our pick-up stop to catch the water taxi, we were blown away by the number of vehicles we saw that looked like military equipment but bore the name of the DHS.

At first, we thought that there was extra security because of some known terrorist threat to the Baltimore area. Then, however, we noticed Secret Service vehicles and concluded that there was some connection to a visit by Obamugabe somewhere in B’more.

So I schmoozed an LEO and learned that there was a rumor that he would be visiting Fort McHenry. We were dismayed by this info, as we did not want his presence to ruin our visit to the fort.

My sister and I had our purses with us as we prepared to board the water taxi with our husbands only to be informed that none but see-through bags could be brought to the fort. She and I are old ladies, but we hotfooted it back to where we were staying to ditch our bags. This was an inconvenience for us, but it was major inconvenience for the young woman we wound up sitting near on the water taxi.

She and her mother were onboard with her 2-year-old daughter. Mom had been forced to return her child’s stroller to her hotel, so she was forced to carry that little girl for a good deal of her visit to Fort McHenry.

As it turned out, we were not forced to look at Obamugabe, although we were made to go through a security scan at Fort McHenry. He never came to the fort, but Biden did, the next day. And many, many motorists were inconvenienced when major highways were shut down just so his motorcade could proceed.

Anybody interested in the NSA activities might want to watch a 2 part series, available on Netflix titled “America’s Secrets.”

The program totals about 2.5 hours, and spans pre-September 11, 2001 through Clapper’s testimony under Obama.

The program shows that both Bush and Obama wanted to continue the program. The program also portrays Snowden as a hero, for the most part.

I come down on the side of national security. I think Snowden committed treason, knowlingly. Why else would he flee to Russia for exile?

The main question and 99% of the focus IS did the NSA commit felonies?

I do not understand how you do not understand this? How you can easily distracted by making this about Snowden and NOT about the NSA committing HIGH TREASON and multiple Felonies???

Our loyalties belong to our Republic, Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, and THE LAW first.... before any stinking lying corrupt politicians. Only GOD is above this. That’s what many men died for, and not some stinking corrupt deceptive government agencies.

By saying it’s okay for the government agencies to commit multiple felonies over and over again daily, ignoring the process of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, subvert and make a mockery of our judicial system, by committing perjury over and over again and bearing false witness IS HIGH TREASON to the Republic for a stinking law breaking, lying, corrupt politician or political appointee.

If you allow government agencies to run wild with unchecked power, then it will ultimately lead to Tyranny. This IS why our country is in so much trouble trouble. No one in government agencies, along with all those who participated is held accountable.

Snowden simply exposed the NSA was breaking the law by spying on all Americans.

One more thing.

The Nuremberg trials taught us that just following orders is NO EXCUSE.

If a law is being broken it is the duty under law of all those who swore an oath to uphold and protect the U.S. Constitution to report it. Saying you were just “following orders” is NO EXCUSE.

That’s what Snowden did. He fled because the Traitors within in the government wants him dead or locked up for exposing them. I don’t understand how you cannot grasp this?

It’s real simple everyone, including government agencies, must follow the law. If they do not like the law, then change it through the proper channels.

We are either a nation of laws or we are not. It’s just that simple.
