All this time people thinking that the U-boat wasn't sunk and that Claudius had failed...And the sub crew in a cold silent grave the whole time.

Pretty sad when you think about it.

The Krauts would have known that the boat never returned, but wouldn't necessarily have known where and when she went down. So there's that, at least.

What's really sad is that the brave young men of her crew were sent off to fight for such a beastly cause.

Anti-submarine warfare is not always able to accurately detect, track, target, attack & confirm. All along that string is a possibility of failure, or ‘uncertainty’ at least.

The allied & German Navies spent a lot of time & resources after the war reconciling reports of attacks on U-boats vs. losses (many of which were surmised to have been the results of attacks). Sometimes what looked like a ‘match’ turned out not to be and vice versa.
