The Krauts would have known that the boat never returned, but wouldn't necessarily have known where and when she went down. So there's that, at least.

What's really sad is that the brave young men of her crew were sent off to fight for such a beastly cause.

I'll say to you the same thing I said to one of our embassy people when he remarked about "how terrible it was to see all those German boys buried here at Bastogne". We should have killed more of them.

The war would have ended earlier and maybe millions more innocent people would have survived.

Don't waste your sympathy on U-boat crews.
