Are religious colleges at risk if Supreme Court approves same-sex marriage?

Religious freedom advocates are flagging a mostly-missed moment from last week's Supreme Court arguments over the constitutionality of same-sex marriage, calling it a warning sign.

They point to an exchange between Justice Samuel Alito and the administration's top lawyer, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.Alito asked if, in the event the Supreme Court holds that there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, would religious colleges risk losing their tax-exempt status if they continued to advocate for traditional marriage only.

Verrilli responded, "I don't deny that ... It is going to be an issue."

Travis Weber, Director of the Family Research Council's Center for Religious Liberty, said he believed Verrilli's logic would eventually extend to churches and just about "anyone holding a traditional view of marriage."

Weber warned that if the current trend continues, those who refuse to endorse same-sex marriage could face "fines, potentially imprisonment."

Well that is the whole idea it to bring about a Godless society as the World is in its final death throes before Satan preforms his final acts against mankind...

Are there any “religious colleges” that actually abide by the Scriptures these days?

That's an excellent point. The "religious colleges" at risk here are the ones who have capitulated in the face of modern secularism for years already ... so how is it that homosexual "marriage" is now a dilemma for them?

The dirty little secret here is that most of these "religious colleges" would be perfectly fine recognizing homosexual marriage. And having this forced on them by Federal law or a U.S. Supreme Court decision will give them plenty of cover to accept something they are already comfortable with anyway. Look at Notre Dame, for heaven's sake. They had no problem inviting a radical pro-abortion half-Muslim president to give a commencement address, didn't they?

“Religious” colleges take government money - scholarships, grants, tax dollars, etc.

Accept Caesar’s coin, do Caesar’s bidding.

Gay marriage. The purpose is to delegitimize god. If there
is no god there is no god given rights. If there is
no god there is no basis for the US Constitution. The
Obamanation of homosexuality is not only a nasty and
filthy perversion but also a wedge between or freedom and
our morals and principals as a nation.
Homosexuality is a disease of the human race, physically and
mentally. If you allow homosexual marriage and adoption then
you open the door to recruitment.

Funny how hetro sex ed is taught in the 4th or 5th grade
but homo sex ed needs to be taught in kindergarten. It’s
all about recruitment into the perversion.

I have news for every body, should SCOTUS make this in to law,EVERY RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION WILL BE FORCED TO DISBAND. Here’s a question that I want to ask every body. WILL THIS APPLY ALSO TO MUSLIM RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION? Or will the government protect the Muslim religious organization. Orr better yet, will the LGBT crowd be so scared of these Muslim organizations, and will keep silent, when Muslims say “MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN”

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli . . . Alito asked if . . . religious colleges risk losing their tax-exempt status if they continued to advocate for traditional marriage only. Verrilli responded, "I don't deny that ... It is going to be an issue."

FedGov is our enemy if it does something so evil. I pray that they will back down peacefully.

Not quite sure the article only asks about the adverse impact of religious colleges, as it is designed to destroy religion completely. By stating the perverts have a “right” to marry, the perverts and their Demonic Party supporters will use the power of government to compel churches to perform these “obamanations” in the churches. Those that refuse to do so, will lose their tax exempt status and and therefore will struggle to remain open. This has been the plan all along... I’m not quite sure why the majority of Americans do not see this, but I’m guessing that the general population of nimrods either 1) don’t care, or 2) never thought it would get to this point. As with all things libtard, never underestimate their level of depravity or disdain toward normal, decent behavior.

“EVERY RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION WILL BE FORCED TO DISBAND”

Because they lose tax-exempt status?

“Hillary Clinton said, “Deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”

I’ve had to read, and re-read this several times. I still can’t believe this woman is a viable candidate for POTUS.
Where did my country go?

This will affect even religious colleges which take no Federal money, so “Caesar’s coin” is a red herring. The precedent is Fedgov taking away Bob Jones’ University’s tax exemption for forbidding interracial dating.

Homosexuals will be applying to work in religious colleges in droves, just as they seek out the one Christian baker to make their wedding cakes. That’s the way they’ve planned it.

OK. I've stayed out of these discussions but I DO have a question.
How important is the tax break? Churches are largely non-profit institutions. Even if they have large incomes, they usually also have large expenses.
Since taxes are paid based on PROFIT, the impact to churches or others would seem to my mostly ignorant self, to be relatively small.
Like I said, I'm mostly ignorant of tax law so maybe I've missed something here.
If we are going to win arguments we have got to be certain we're not railing at a straw man and I'd like to understand that this isn't one.

The precedent is Fedgov taking away Bob Jones’ University’s tax exemption for forbidding interracial dating.

The other precedents are the recent cases forcing private businesses, which were not recipients of government funds nor tax-exempt, to serve homosexuals.

There seem to be some who are thinking, "This won't happen to us ... only to those people who deserve it because they (fill in the blank)." Good luck with that.

A significant element of tax exemption is freedom from property tax and sales tax, so the critical question is not whether the institution has taxable income after expenses.

But see my #17, because I believe the tax issue, like the “receives government funds” issue, has already been overtaken by events.

No, not really, but I was making a point about the direction in which the argument of your post was tending.
