Victory, what victory? The generation that's clueless about VE Day

54 per cent did not know it celebrates the end of Second World War in Europe

May 8 will mark 70 years since Winston Churchill famously declared victory

Seven per cent thought it was Margaret Thatcher and four thought Tony Blair

Three-quarters of those asked underestimated tragic death toll of 60 million

It marked the end of years of blood, sweat and tears – but most young people have no idea what VE Day is.

With two days until the 70th anniversary, a survey found 54 per cent of Britons aged 18 to 25 did not know that Friday's VE Day celebrates the end of the Second World War in Europe.

And 38 per cent could not identify Winston Churchill as the prime minister who declared victory in Europe on May 8, 1945.

Seven per cent believed it was former US president John F Kennedy, another 7 per cent said Margaret Thatcher and 4 per cent thought it was Tony Blair.

When they were asked about VE day, they mistook it for VD day and that’s why not many were aware of the actual date. If they had, I wonder how many would realize we had two world wars..

Thanks to Homer Simpson, we here on FR know quite well what VE day is, and the victory it represents.

Thanks Homer.

Idiots are confused because they probably don’t realize EUrope begins with an “E.”

Or ask college students here and they see VE and probably think it’s some feminist vagina celebration day.

Nearly two million German members of the Nazi Wehrmacht surrendered on May 5th and May 6th 70 years ago. There were still many more thoudands of holdouts under the orders of Hitler’s successor.

In Holland, May 5th is a huge day. Much celebration. We were just there.

However, they are scaling back celebrations of May 5, 1945 to once every five years from now on, probably until the 2045. Then at 25 year intervals I suspect.

November 11 had huge significance after 1918, for a while. It still does as veterans day, but has become a semi-holiday, like Columbus Day, Good Friday, MLK Day and even Presidents Day. Add Caesar Chavez day (March 31) in California.

I wonder, if we were to go back to April 1935, what would be the percentage of people who would have a basic knowledge of the events 70 years earlier, as the Civil War ended? Would the polled make similar errors, proclaiming, say, Theodore Roosevelt as the President instead of Lincoln, or perhaps as the top Union General instead of Grant? Would they know that the surrender occurred at Appomattox, or how many would think it was at Gettysburg, or Atlanta?

People were not always as apathetic and ignorant as young people are nowadays.

They used by be way more educated and well-read compared to the VD-ridden kids today.

Remember British people love to wind others up. Never take a UK poll seriously.

Our kids are taught this at school, and the UK currently is wall to wall in VE Day fever: newspapers, TV, radio, commemorative magazines.

Western Civilization is so screwed. World War 2 was ONLY the central event of the entire 20th Century...not that the Millenials give a crap about life on this ball of dust before they became connected to the WWW.

No wonder the Leftists are winning, nobody has a f’ing clue how we got to where we are now, so the Leftists can make up any kind of crap they want.

Maybe I’ll move to China - at least they revere their elders and study the past, they can’t be all bad.

People in 1935 were educated in history - so, YES, they’d have gotten the right answers at least 80% of the time.

This generation is clueless about many things, but like Obama, their self-esteem is unshakable.

The best way to revitalize the day is to post the American flag.
