Your comment seems to presuppose an Army (working in tandem with the Air Force) that are like, say the Army and Air Force of WW2. With the high tech weaponry of today, though greatly outnumbered by armed civilians, they probably believe they will prevail.

Yes they could. You like driving around, having electricity,
banking, running water, medical help? All of these things and
many more could come to an end with a small standing army.
About the only place that can or would stand against this
would be Texas and guess where the exorcise is. Up north
and California they would greet martial law with open arms
because they are already conditioned to accept
totalitarian socialism. It’s the south and especially Texas
that they have to destroy because they are the only ones
really trying to stop the socialists/liberal takeover of the US.
The vast majority of Americans would do what a buck private tells them to do if the feds order it.
Add to that tiny military footprint ALL of DEA, ATF, Federal Marshalls, Border Agents, FBI, CIA, NSA, all the local and State Police who don't join the citizenry, and all the millions of Federal Gov't workers who Obama bought 100-million rounds of 9mm ammo for, and the picture gets considerably uglier.
