Healthcare For Those In U.S. Illegally Could Cost California $740 Million A Year

Sen. Ricardo Lara's bill, SB 4, would extend Medi-Cal coverage to people in the country illegally. By MELANIE MASON

Senate analyst estimates cost of Medi-Cal expansion bill ranges from $280 million to $740 million annually Estimated price tag of SB 4 would drop if President Obama's deportation relief order stands Extending state-subsidized healthcare coverage to people in the country illegally could cost California as much as $740 million annually, according to a Senate fiscal analysis released Monday.

The report affixes a price tag to the proposal for the first time since Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) introduced his bill last December.

Researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA estimate that, in California, about 1.8 million people who are in the country illegally lack healthcare coverage. Around 1.5 million of them would qualify for Medi-Cal.

With new immigration proposals, state lawmakers hope to build momentum With new immigration proposals, state lawmakers hope to build momentum

The analysis lays out two scenarios to calculate the proposal's cost. Under the status quo, the increase in Medi-Cal spending would range from $280 million to $740 million annually. The report estimates that between 50-60% of eligible immigrants would enroll in the healthcare program.

The report also examines how President Obama's recent executive order offering deportation relief to certain immigrants would affect the measure's cost. If the order -- currently on hold due to a court injunction -- is upheld, around 900,000 immigrants in the state would qualify, according to the analysis, and would be eligible for Medi-Cal and other state programs.

In February, legislative analysts warned that the fiscal impact of the president's action is "highly uncertain."

RAT supermajority in the Capitol.

ALL statewide elected positions went to the RATS last election, the AG position was about the only real contested seat and I believe it was stolen...the vote was just too close.

CA needs to be split, coastal counties (RAT) vs. inland counties (Conservative)...we have no legitimate representation.

Leland Lee, RAT extraordinaire is under indictment for gun running, corruption, racketeering, etc. was one of the prime anti-gun legislators of our time.

They already are. Had had a real reason to visit one of our better er’s a couple of months ago. They used to have an urgent care attached and I thought they still did is the only reason I went there. Once I got there and saw they no longer had an urgent care I was too sick to go anywhere else so checked in.
The waiting room was full of what I think were Medical people. I watched for 1 1/2 hours as they ran back and forth to the vending machines and in and out smoking. Out of everyone there it looked like only 3 or so, me included, were really sick enough to be in a hospital emergency room. Anyway, after 1 1/2 hours I was too sick to sit there any longer and left. I did a walk in to my doctor’s office which they didn’t like but I was just too sick for them to turn away.
