Amongst all the chaos in Seattle during Friday’s May Day riot, a man was seen walking through the crowd wearing a tactical vest with an SKS rifle slung over his shoulder.

Identified as Shayne Butts, he tells reporters “I’m here to ensure peoples’ civil rights get respected, just the basics, First Amendment right to peacefully assemble, to free speech… I don’t like communism, but these people have a right to free speech.”

He says the chamber was empty, but there were rounds in the magazines.

... and to the Second Amendment in a place where the Constitution is to be nothing more than an “evolving plan”.

I’m not against this. The Founders never said that the intent of the Second Amendment was to not draw attention to oneself. If this guy was following the rules and was not brandishing or otherwise causing a ruckus, it’s his right to be armed.

I understand a lot of concealed carriers are against the idea of open carry, but it’s truly the Constitutional intent of the Second amendment and was, up until recently, considered the “gentlemanly” way to carry. Just because the public freaks out doesn’t make it illegal.

Roger that. The fact that these pantywaists freak out over the mere sight of a firearm is what’s become of us. OMG! That tyke over there has toy guns. What shall we do? Pretty durn sad. I fondly remember playing with my Roy Rodgers cap guns for hours and hours. Was that any different from today’s video games. Well, yeah, we were outside and had to dodge all sorts of things real time. No reset buttons during crab apple wars. And those little suckers hurt.

These are the same losers that do not freak out when they see a 40 year old overweight, hairy man dressed in a tutu celebrating his deviancy in front of children (or adults).

He’s just reminding them why, how and by whom this country was founded. Nothing wrong with that.

I hope his “should thing that goes up” didn’t hurt anyone.

I’m sorry, but this seems insanely stupid to me. People that do this are asking for attention or trouble, or maybe need some intervention. I have guns, have CCW, and might do open carry but to go to a protest to show off or intimidate is ignorant and stupid. Not helpful to those of us wanting respect of our 2nd Amendment rights.

“Shayne Butts”

Is that a nom de guerre?

Reminds me of pulling duty in the rifle range butts at Parris Island.

Did the event’s organizers set up a Safe Space for participants? If not any anxiety or mental anguish suffered by participants due to open carry is clearly their fault.

Rights not exercised are rights lost. As long as he was obeying the law, good on him. And yes, this "is" "helpful to those of us wanting respect of our 2nd Amendment rights".

It is you "cringe in the corner" types who aren't helpful. You are actually collaborating with those who want those rights denied. The sad thing is that you apparently don't realize that.

In the picture, there’s a guy behind him, looks like a cop but there’s no cop markings that I can see, has a pistol on his right hip.
Nobody seems to be freaking out over the pistol.

“Safe Space”? This was a public street so no such thing. Not sure of Washington’s specific laws for open carry but I doubt there are any restrictions and anyone bothered just needs to get over it. That said, just because we can carry, doesn’t mean we should. My observation is that I think this guy is acting stupid by doing this—especially him and his buddy dressing up in tactical gear. They look like a pair of crazies, which is not helpful to the common citizen that wants our 2nd Amendment rights respected.

People have a right to take our flag and trample it too. Doesn’t mean it’s the wise thing to do.

"You cringe in the corner types" is unnecessary. Seriously, just because we can carry, doesn't mean we have to or should. These two dressed up as they were and carrying are doing it, in my opinion, to stir up a reaction. Taunting people. That they did not get a reaction is good. Got their 5 minutes of media attention and went home.

I was in a WalMart a few weeks ago and as I came in a woman and her friend did so. She had a Glock open carry. I observed her strut around a couple isles at the front of the store, then leave the store without buying anything. She was clearly tempting someone to say something. No one did, she left bored.

I've been around guns for longer than I can remember. With my dad as a police officer, our house had lots. Never treated them as toys, never needed to show off. Guess it is an age thing, but at 55 I carry or do not for its sake, nothing more, nothing less.

Your comment is much in line with the liberal media's comments about Pamela Geller...

You might want to lay off listening to them for awhile they have twisted you ability to think right.

An SKS??

Meh.
I’m still hoping someone would open carry a SCAR Heavy so I could drool all over it.

THAT’S a purdy rifle!

I used to think the same way. But now I am not so sure. Fortunately, I can observe from a place where people walking around with rifles and shotguns is not unusual or cause for comment.

Seems to me an SKS is a perfect carbine to carry when attending a communist rally ...
