In 1990 I was stationed in Ft Dix, NJ. I had a black soldier from Baltimore whose appendix had burst and he was in real danger of dying. His family could not afford the trip so I drove down in my POV to get them.

All I had was an address, they had no phone. I searched for the street for almost an hour and finally saw a black cop going in to McDonald's. I followed him in and as he sat down with his breakfast I showed him the address I was trying to find.

He looked at it and looked up at me and said "I'll tell you how to get there but I won't go with you... and I have a gun."

The mother and father (both in their 70's) were sitting on the curb waiting for me and jumped in and said "Go!" like they had just robbed a bank.

Post Script - the kid survived and was one of my best soldiers. I hope he didn't go back to that hell hole.
