Prior to 1965, about 25% of blacks were born out of wedlock. After 50 years of LBJ’s “Great Societys it’s now about 72%.

And prior to 1965, many of those born out of wedlock had parents who married soon after their birth and raised them. I'm not sure where to find statistics, but I've read one of the notable black conservatives (I forget whether it was Sowell or Williams) who documented the norm for black families in the "Jim Crow era" was an out of wedlock birth, marriage, and subsequent children born to the married couple. Now black mothers in poor neighborhoods throw the fathers out (and not even just those who do this to get SNAP benefits, my wife has a student in the doctoral program where she teaches who was gainfully employed before entering the program and is now on a fellowship stipend, who has a child and "Don't want no man around.")
