IPad Glitch Affects American Airlines Flights, Issue Likely Related To Recent Software Update

Several American Airlines flights were delayed Tuesday night after a software glitch occurred in the Apple iPads provided to pilots, forcing authorities to return planes to the gates to fix the malfunction, the Verge reported. The affected flights reportedly included AA2413, AA2276, AA1654, AA235 and AA128.

Passengers were reportedly asked to exit the aircraft. American Airlines first confirmed the issue to a passenger, named Bill Jacaruso, who was traveling to Austin from Dallas/Fort Worth airport on flight AA1654.

“Some flights are experiencing an issue with a software application on pilot iPads,” Andrea Huguely, a spokeswoman for the American Airlines, told the Verge. “In some cases, the flight has had to return to the gate to access a Wi-Fi connection to fix the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers. We are working to have them on the way to their destination as soon as possible.”

Another representative for the airline said that the issue, which had affected "a few dozen flights," had been identified and that a fix was being worked on.

Pilots use iPads to access charts and airport info, instead of carrying paper charts. The data on their route and all possible alternate landing sites is programmed into the iPads before they leave the ground.

It is much more efficient than the old paper charts and gives the pilots access to much more information. But the iPad is not integrated into the flight controls in any way.

Yep. Good old Chinese-made iPads.

Apparently, iPads are used as “Electronic Flight Bags.” Replacing regular logs and allowing integration is a good thing, but they should obviously have some sort of backup plan!

Aye! And that is the highest thing!

Something that provides more information more efficiently leads to greater safety.

Take the case of the Gimli Glider. An Air Canada flight ran out of fuel at cruising altitude because of a fueling mistake before take off. The flight was saved because one of the pilots happened to have been stationed at a RCAF base nearby decades before. The pilots were able to divert to the closed air base for a dead stick landing.

The flight was saved because of the odd information that happened to be in the pilot’s head. With an iPad, that kind of information can be in every cockpit on every flight.

I feel better with pilots who have information in their heads.

It’s inconceivable that planes ever flew without them, isn’t it?

A pilot can’t know everything. If another pilot, without the same military experience as that particular pilot, had been assigned to that flight, it would have been lost with all hands.

I’ll have to agree...the last update for iPad has made mine almost useless. I have at least 10 “page reloads” a day, for no discernible reason.

When you click the field to post on Facebook, the keyboard covers the field, then the field will not accept the cursor.

And the “disappearing tabs” !

I pretty much hate this iPad now.

That is one reason a device like an iPad can never be part of a control system of a certified aircraft. If the manufacturer is going to push out updates, it can effect the reliability of the device, and it would no longer be certified. There is no way Apple would go through the certification process for every update and patch.

So iPads are relegated to a supporting role, acting as the Electronic Flight Bag.

That sounds like you’ve got a problem with a corrupted file, perhaps during the install process. One thing to do is to do a clean install of the system, using iTunes. Be sure to do a full backup using the iTunes program first.

When using iTunes to reset your iPad, you get it it the new state with a clean install.

It’s good to know that American Airlines is giving all the necessary information to the crews, that may be needed in an emergency.

And, yes, I can see what you mean, in that if not for that quirk of fate, and if they didn’t have that particular pilot there (with that information in his head), all of them would have been a disaster!

When they are using devices in their system, no software should be updated. It’s a lot better to use a stable system and upgrade software and hardware all at the same time ever two or more years. I used the free programmable PDFCreator for a client app, and every time an update was pushed out things broke. Finally stopped the updates and now it’s been flawless.
