Bernie Sanders To Announce Presidential Run
VPR ^ | 48 minutes ago | By Bob Kinzel

VPR News has learned from several sources that Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday.

Sanders will release a short statement on that day and then hold a major campaign kickoff in Vermont in several weeks.

Audio from this story will be posted at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29.

Sanders' entry into the Democratic race ensures that Hillary Clinton will face a challenge to win the support of the liberal wing of the party.

Sanders' basic message will be that the middle class in America has been decimated in the past two decades while wealthy people and corporations have flourished.

His opposition to a proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal (T.P.P.) shows how he plans to frame this key issue of his campaign.

"If you want to understand why the middle class in America is disappearing and why we have more wealth and income inequality in America than we have had since the late 1920s, you have to address the issue of trade,” Sanders said in a phone interview on April 23.

As the longest-serving Independent member of Congress, Sanders has been a vocal critic of the influence that large corporations have on the political process.

"All of the major corporations want to continue with this trade policy. Wall Street wants to continue this trade policy. The drug companies want to continue this trade policy. But organizations representing American workers and the environment do not want to continue the trade policy. They want new trade policies,” he said.

He’s in it to make Hillary look like a moderate choice.

Vermont used to be a pretty decent place but the home of "Silent Cal" has morphed into the nest of "Barnum, Bernie, and Leahy".

Egad, how sad 'tis that once fine State has taken up permanent residence in a political and cultural septic tank is a wonder to behold!

He isn’t running under the American Communist Party? It is no secret, after all.

Sanders is the shrewdest manipulator this side of pandemonium. What he did with the VA was masterful. He’d block reform measures while pushing spending increases for the VA. That was he could grandstand on the notion he cares about veterans while putting Republicans in the position of sending good money after bad in a fraud filled system.

SerioUsly. Look up his quotes. Lots of faux patriotism and sentiments when he was actively blocking all reforms to the VA.

Totally sinister man.

As much as I would like to believe he’s a serious candidate, and will hurt her in a real primary race, he’s just doing this for a little attention.

Meanwhile Hillary gets to appear the reasonable one, and emerge unscathed while our boys are doing all her oppo research in a bruising GOP primary.

Bernie Sanders is a very strong candidate for the left and should not be discounted. He has a likable grandfatherly personality. He could very well win the presidency if the GOP falls asleep.

There is probably not a single substantive issue where I would agree with Sanders, but he is a very rare bird in the political left. He is basically honest and upfront about his views and what he wants to do. He pulls no punches and calls it like he sees it. I don’t like his politics, but I respect his character. Honest lefties are not exactly a common find.
