The owners of an Oregon bakery learned Friday that there is a severe price to pay for following their Christian faith.
A judge for the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) recommended a lesbian couple should receive $135,000 in damages for their emotional suffering after Sweet Cakes by Melissa refused to make them a wedding cake.
As a result - Aaron and Melissa Klein could lose everything they own — including their home.
The Oregonian reports the recommended penalty is not final and could be raised or lowered by State Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian.
The controversy started in 2013 when Aaron Klein declined to provide a cake for a lesbian wedding. Later that year, the women filed a complaint against Klein and his wife, Melissa.
"The facts of this case clearly demonstrate that the Kleins unlawfully discriminated against the Complainants,” read a statement by the BOLI to the Oregonian. “Under Oregon law, businesses cannot discriminate or refuse service based on sexual orientation, just as they cannot turn customers away because of race, sex, disability, age, religion. Our agency is committed to fair and thorough enforcement of Oregon civil rights laws, including the Equality Act of 2007."
Within hours of the ruling, the Family Research Council facilitated the establishment of a GoFundMe account to help the Kleins raise the money the need. In less than eight hours, more than $100,000 was raised.
However, late Friday GoFundMe pulled the plug — sending this message to would-be donors:
“After careful review by our team, we have found the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions,” the message read. “The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal.”
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins blasted the harsh penalty levied against the Kleins.

William Voegeli’s writings point out the left is not interested in solutions, they just want a group to feel sorry about and pity, to enhance their sense of importance and superiority and provide them with themes to use to win the public debate. What could be better than religious bigotry against gays? I for one am tired of having their sexual preferences rubbed in my face. I don’t agree with raising money to pay this fine, that would reward the wrong side of the argument. Instead simply refuse to comply with the “judges” ruling and take it to a higher court. Start a recall campaign against this “judge” and rid ourselves of his bully pulpit.
Donate to their legal fund to keep fighting not to reward the wrong. Never pay the homosexuals a dime.

This is the thing which, if seriously pushed, is going to undo years of tacit support for more mainstream civil rights causes. People could, if with grumbling, agree to be color blind in private business. In fact it was largely liberals who did not want to be color blind. But I never heard of anyone who actually went out of a business rather than have it be color blind. The non negotiables of Christian faith are going to force this with respect to these “gay cakes.”
[This is what the Nazis did to the Jews. Force their businesses to close, put them out of business, fire them from their jobs, make it so they can’t support their families. All under the appropriate set of laws to make it seem legal.]
AS the Nazis did, the American democrat and allies rino do to Christians. I hold the DC Congress and all democrat judges and lawyers responsible for destroying the once great America. And I hope to dance on their graves when the due time comes.
I couldn't agree more. Hopefully with funds they'll take this injustice just as high as they can go!
I have already made up my mind on these issues, anyone sues me for anything such as this, I will not pay one dime. I can also muster a whole lot more people than they can to protect my business.
