Finland election: anti-EU right marches onto centre stage

A right wing anti-EU party has enjoyed success in Finland’s election that saw the governing National Coalition suffer a dramatic defeat. After a campaign dominated by domestic issues, the opposition Centre party won 49 seats of the 200 up for election, while the anti-EU Finns Party won 38 and the governing National Coalition won 37.

As a party of the populist right, the Finns latches on to voter discontent wherever it can be found. It did so spectacularly in the 2011 elections, where the party (previously known as the True Finns) expanded its vote share by an historic 14.9% vote share – the largest increase in parliamentary history.

That success was largely attributed to the Finns' unashamedly anti-European integration platform, which distinguished them from all other major political parties in Finland. At the time, Eurozone bailouts were a critical issue in Finnish politics, and the bailout-seeking member-states were widely disparaged as fiscally irresponsible and reckless.

The True Finns are anything but “right”; they are big on the welfare state and progressive taxation. They are also fond of leftist social meddling such as “anti-bullying” programs (which of course increase bullying).

As for being anti-EU, they are not opposed to being in it; they are of the “reform from within” crowd.

They’re not called ‘True Finns’ anymore, and within the socialist paradigm of European politics The Finns Party is considered on the right.

Finland has stubbornly high wages/unemployment, a stagnant economy, and not much else to show for its decades old collaboration with the European Union.

Any opposition to the socialist economic agenda imposed by Brussels is considered anti-EU. The Finns Party represents that opposition.

If The Finns Party becomes part of the next Finnish government, Timo Soini will likely become the next Finance Minister of Finland... something akin to UKIP’s Nigel Farage becoming the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

They certainly are not moving to leave, and were pushed to drop “true” from their appellation.

At least the UKIP, for all their many problems, do have “independence” in their name and insist on leaving the EU empire.

First things first.

A Finns Party government is a NO vote on any future EU bailouts.

Forcing Greece into default will have the same effect on the EU as any other member departing.

There is no need to directly advance an EU exit strategy when there are other means immediately available.

There aren’t any EU bailouts. There are loans with very draconian terms, to wit that whatever country takes them has surrendered their financial sovereignty in perpetuity to the elites running the EU, never mind political sovereignty. A Finns victory in Helsinki will never stop that from happening so long as the elites want it to keep going on, although with the will, the Finns would extricate themselves from an entity that cannot be reformed from within any more than the USSR could be.

Take a closer look at what the EU did to Greece. They forced the government that initially refused the loans to fall, and be replaced by a government willing to take them in exchange for their terms. It’s economic imperialism and blackmail. The exact same thing happened to Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

I’m afraid it may be too late for Great Britain. They have allowed too many Muslims into their country and now the Muslims have some power. It could happen here, too, if we continue to bring in thousands of Muslims.

The True Finns LOST 1 seat, they have more than the National Coalition now because that party lost 7.

A party to the left of both of them gained 14 and is now in the driver’s seat.

Yay? No.

And it harbingers nothing for the UKIP because there is no chance than UKIP will even slightly approach the number of seats the Tories will win.

I’m glad we only have 2 major parties here. (I’m sure someone will joke or seriously claim we actually have only 1)s seat.

The Finns party moved UP in the political ranks to second place which is much more important to them politically than the single seat they lost. The Finns Party is now in a much stronger position to determine the composition of the next Finnish government than it was four years ago. Furthermore, the Centre Party which gained 14 seats is firmly rooted in the agrarian principles of federalism and decentralization.

And it harbingers nothing for the UKIP because there is no chance than UKIP will even slightly approach the number of seats the Tories will win.

Lol…of course not. I’m sure deep staters across Europe and America are calling their central bankers in Brussels saying the exact same thing! UKIP doesn’t need to win the upcoming elections to dramatically effect the policies and composition of the next British government there…especially if the SNP does their part.

I’m glad we only have 2 major parties here.

Indeed. The two dimensional left/right paradigm is a much easier concept to imbibe. One only has to look around to see how well it’s working.
