A world free of genocide will be on their minds and comfortable shoes on their feet when people of conscience meet Sunday morning outside of Santa Rosas Congregation Shomrei Torah.
Theyll take part in the Walk Against Genocide, created seven years ago by a 14-year-old boy whod become aware of the mass killings in Darfur and felt compelled to act.
Since then, the walk Gabe Ferrick founded has raised more than $100,000 for relief to survivors of genocide in Darfur, Congo and elsewhere, and for advocacy to resolve the issues that can lead to mass killings.
Participants in Sundays walk will gather at 9 a.m. at the synagogue on Bennett Valley Road, near Farmers Lane. There will be speakers, music, African crafts, a solar cooker demonstration and, for all walkers, home-baked cookies.
Ferrick graduated from Montgomery High School in 2013 and left the organizing of the walk to Noah Bacon and Jacob Matalon.
Bacon, whos 15 and a student at Sonoma Academy, notes that Sundays walk commemorates the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi Germanys Auschwitz concentration camp, and the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire.
I might go for the solar cooker. I helped someone move and their friend asked, "What's this?" holding up a dish rack. I had the guy convinced it was a solar toaster.
just as well to stay at home and post a tweet against genocide
easier, more comfortable, too, and you can watch the game
I never realized there was a genocide in Santa Rosa.
Yes, there is genocide in Santa Rosa. Why do you think everyone comes here. You can be a victim or perpetrator of genocide after the free wine tasting.
For the Charles Schulz Museum.
if someone wants to stop genocides (or at least slow them down a bit), they need to get politically active and make sure another Obama never gets elected in USA. Then they can invest in Israel, purchase Israel bonds, and donate to charitable organizations that help the victims or descendants of victims of genocide and organizations prevent repeat performances...in tangible ways. Israel and also those organizations that help victims of slaughters in Africa and elsewhere.
Walking down the street in sunny Santa Rosa, California (very nice suburban city in the Wine Country) (even if you’re carrying a sign).... nice gesture and congrats to the kid who thought it up... but NOT effective, sorry.
The only genocide they wont mention is the moslems in Syria. McCains ISIS buddies or the Palestinians,,,,todays actual Nazis.
When will the Nuremberg-style trials start for pro-abortion leaders on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity?
I am familiar with this congregation/temple. I think they have a lesbian rabbi (go figure). The parking lot is filled with cars with Obama stickers on them. They also think Bibi is bad and need to loosen up on the Palestine issue that Israel needs to simply talk to and negotiate with Hamas and the PLO.
To end genocide we would need to rid the world of communism and Islam.
there is genocide in Santa Rosa?
i have met such “Jews” ... they are, imho, as close to Hopeless (mentally, politically, and also usually spiritually) as is possible. About as bright as a pile of dung in a dark field on a moonless night.
If the good young boy wishes to help defend against another genocide, another thing he can do is get well armed and learn how to shoot
