Supercenter mystery: Conspiracy theories fly around the suddenly shuttered Wal-Mart
Tulsa World ^ | Friday, April 24, 2016 | Robert Evatt

From crime to labor issues to an intricate military coup of the entire United States, conspiracy theories are flying around the closed Wal-Mart supercenters in Tulsa and elsewhere.

The official reason for the sudden closure of the store at Admiral Place and Memorial Drive last week was two years of plumbing issues that would take six months to fix.

That was the same reason given for each of the four other Wal-Mart locations, which all closed at the same time with just a few hours’ notice. The other stores are in Brandon, Florida; Pico Rivera, California; Midland, Texas; and Livingston, Texas.

Though the fuel pump and the pharmacy remain open at the Tulsa Wal-Mart, most of the supercenter has gone dark. One entrance is covered in black tarp, while the other is guarded by two Tulsa Police Department cars.

One of the most commonly-cited theories cited by commenters on the Tulsa World website and the Tulsa World Facebook page is that the store was closed due to crime problems. In February, officials from the Tulsa Police Department complained that the store received 1,500 larceny calls between 2012 and 2014, which is 400 to 500 more than other supercenters.

I worked at a walmart “Supercenter” a while back. I was given orders to keep my shop open from 7am to 8pm every day but I was only given 4 techs and 2.5 service writers. And absolutely no overtime (I was written up once for punching out a minute late) The store manager just flat out refused to spend anything on the shop. I was down two lifts and had to stock tires that were 6 to 10 years old.

However there is another super walmart 30 miles away that is fantastic because the store manager actually believes in customer service and fully staffing the operations.

If corporate doesn't crack down on the managers Walmart will become Kmart

That’s what they get for courting the food stamp users.

They are going to reopen them as gay supercenters.

If Wal-Mart is marketing to just 3.8% of the U.S. population ... it’s no wonder they are having problems ... LOL ...

If you ever want to be convinced there are zombies and other ghouls... go to wallyworld after midnight.

Last time I did that, I ran into "the Dude"..."The Big Lebowski"

It was fun.

Never seen the Tulsa store and rarely go in one anywhere.

Two points:

1. I think your right. They are just closing the stores because their accountants tell them they are big losers, for whatever reasons.

2. I could fix ANY plumbing problem those stores might have without closing them.

I think Wal-Mart is losing money big-time at this store and losing money overall, too ... so they are starting to shed the stores that are the big money losers!

Then why the story about plumbing and reopening the store in six months? If it's a crime-ridden money loser then why not just close it for good?

I suspect Walmart’s trying to get around liberal union filth... as we all are... Don’t you just hate those people?

Then why close them temporarily? Why not just say it's closed and be done with it?

Four out of five have no Union activity. And Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida are hardly union hotbeds.

Insightful cuban.

I suspect they closed these stores for some reason PC hysterics would find offensive - and they didn’t want to deal with liberal crazies for years.

No one wants to deal with liberal crazies and their paid internet trolls...

We’ll see ... when the six months passes, but right now I think it’s subterfuge from Wal-Mart. I don’t think they want to give out the real story; more questions would be raised and they would have more adverse press.

Our local Wal-Mart is undergoing a remodel, but it is still open. The only inconvenience is that the construction company is blocking off part of a parking lot.

One of the workers came from Minnesota & told me ‘I was shoveling snow & taking care of chickens a week ago’. We bantered about the high winds here in N Nevada. But he seemed to be very grateful for the job. He hinted that many other Wal-Marts are undergoing remodels.

I also noticed in the dairy area that new displays were being installed, and instead of open cooler cases, the new ones had doors on them & shelves, like a smaller version of the frozen items.

I haven’t heard of any Brandon Wal-Mart in Tulsa, or nearby. Where is that?

The K-Mart nearest to us is clean, well staffed and well stocked. And though some of the shoppers and help LOOK different than I do, I've not noticed any negative behavior.

Yep, I’ve seen them do major remodels and the store stays open. Wal-Mart is closing to fix plumbing ... LOL ...

Forty five years go the Admiral area was not a bad area. I still go to DONGS Sporting Goods when there.

NORTH of Admiral things got ratty. I remember when the shopping center on the circle had a K-mart, then it got flooded. Then a Walmart which closed, and now is some type of training center.
Back then a theater opened showing Spanish language films. It soon closed because of not enough Spanish patrons. Now the whole area is like Little Mexico.

Now WEST of Harvard on Admiral things go downhill real fast! Lock your car doors, lock and load!

When has a company taken a hit for saying they closed a store because it wasn't profitable?

I'm wondering if this isn't an experiment on Walmarts part. If all these stores have been there for a while and have a workforce that are full-timers or part-timers over the new $9 minimum wage then maybe Walmart is seeing what happens to profitability if they close a store, fire the staff, then open it with new, lower-cost employees?
