Oberlin Activists Posted Creepy Messages Accusing Specific Students of Perpetuating Rape Culture

Left-leaning student activists at Oberlin College hung posters at the Christina Hoff Sommers event earlier this week that identified the students involved in bringing the individualist-feminist and AEI scholar to campus.
Each poster gave the name of a specific student-member of the Oberlin College Republicans and Libertarians and accused that person of perpetuating rape culture.
Images of the posters were sent to Reason via a source who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation. The last names of the students identified by the posters were blurred before Reason received them.
According to the source, a group of approximately 10 student-activists were behind the posters.
They have the right to denounce their fellow students as perpetuators of rape culture, I suppose, though the fact that some students would smear others with this charge for merely bringing a speaker to campus is disappointing. Do students no longer recognize that the entire point of challenge is to grapple with new and different ways of thinking about the world?
Over at The Washington Post, David Bernstein wonders whenand howthe idea of seeking physical safety from uncomfortable ideas arose on college campuses:
Just today I learned (via Hans Bader) that Oberlin, supposedly one of the great liberal arts colleges in the world, has been in a tizzy because of a speech by the rather mainstream conservative feminist Christina Hoff Summers, which supposedly made students feel unsafe well in advance. And so on.
In no examples that I have seen has there been any actual threat or prospect of violence against the students complaining that they feel unsafe.
This is a huge threat to the future of free speech nevertheless. Todays college students are going to be tomorrows judges, and if they truly believe that safety means never having to deal with opinions that disagree with ones cherished beliefs, then censorship has a good chance of gaining the upper hand over freedom of speech. After all, public safety can be a justification for suppressing speech, as with the fighting words doctrine.

This is textbook defamation. Those named in the posters should sue.

Additionally, all federal money given to Oberlin should be cut-off immediately.
BTW—Oberlin is the alma mater of that cow Lena Dunham—She of the false rape accusation against a fellow student who happened to be a Republican.
How does that figure into the creation of “rape culture?”

Isn’t it apalling that republicans and libertarians are such overt rapists while democrats are so well behaved and respectful of others?

Yes, the Party of Jim Crow is not racist and the Party of Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy is respectful of women.

Bernstein’s an idiot.
The idea of seeking physical safety from unpleasant ideas arose when the Fascist Progressive Left realized the concept could be used as a weapon to beat any opposition into silence and drive them underground or, even better, off campus.
This isn’t about fear. It’s about faking fear in a way that enables and permits intimidation and coercion.
To: tanknetter
Exactly. If they were that afraid, they wouldn’t be at a co-ed school. They go looking for their “oppressors” in order to follow them to the ends of the earth. You can’t be a victim if no one wants to harm you, and if they really don’t, their mere existence must be turned into a threat, albeit the “victim” seeks eternal proximity to their “oppressor”.

Yep. These kids have a lot to learn about free speech, and one of those lessons includes the fact that freedom of speech does NOT include the right to slander or libel private citizens.

Defamation is tough. First, what is a
“promoter of rape culture?” Then they have to prove damages, and reputation doesn’t count. Then they would have to hope they have never written a nasty facebook post, or have a rat party picture posted with anyone leering at a co-ed. The defense could end up more injurious than the offense.

Idiotic “activists” do legally actionable stupidity.
If sued, it will be worn with pride as a badge of honor by said idiots.

Why do these ‘women’ go to college? There is a 100% chance they will be raped multiple times by all the men on campus YET they still go. If I knew my odds of getting raped were so high I wouldn’t go there.
To: Regal
That’s true, but even if the trial is not successful, it would garner attention to just how far the Left is going to silence opposing views.
We need to keep hammering them with the truth at every turn and show them for what they are. Exposure is a huge enemy of the Hard Left — which is why much of their efforts are spent obfuscating what they stand for and intend.
