A Virginia police officer detained a television news videographer Tuesday because his camera vest could have been tactical gear.

The incident was captured on cell phone video by veteran investigator reporter Russ Ptacek from WUSA9, who posted it on Twitter along with photos of the detainment. The video is posted below.

The cop was from the Arlington County Police Department, part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

Doesn’t TSA do this kind of thing too now, if you’re taking pics of airport terminals or bridges?

Another day, more out-of-control police. Any that pull this type of unconstitutional BS should be immediately fired. There should be zero tolerance for illegal action by police.

“... if you’re taking pics of airport terminals or bridges?”

I am sure they do but in this case (and I may be wrong but don’t think so) the Press Pass info was displayed around his neck. He also had another member of the press with him (the reporter).

When I was a young punk kid, 15 or so, my buddies and I got detained by the local police for some shenanigans. We all had on camo and black berets. The police officer said that “impersonating a military officer is illegal and he can arrest us.” Well, since we were obviously 15 years old, had no rank or insignia on our BDUs, we all started to laugh and make fun of him. That didn’t go over well and we all ended up in the chief’s office on an early Saturday morning to wash all the towns police cars. Good times.

That's funny. We had one here in Indiana a couple years ago just about 15 miles north where a small town cop arrested a guy, put him in the back of the cruiser... I think they found a pot pipe in his car or something. The guy slipped his cuffs and stole the cruiser, losing it in a ditch sometime later.

This is a really small town too, I don't live in the area anymore but dad was telling me the ribbing he got was pretty relentless...

If you spend any time at all on about any firearms board on the Interwebz, everybody there knows and will be quick to tell you wearing one of those is a dead giveaway that you're armed, a poseur, and a wannabe HSLD "tacticool" operator.

GEEZE - I’m an ole great-gramma - semi retired photog/writer.

I often wear my photographers vest , even if not intent on doing a story - as I like the freedom all those pockets give me - no need to carry a purse or tote.

When police don’t know the difference between a photographers - or fisherman’s? ) vest from a tactical vest - not that a tactical vest is illegal? - the ‘dumb down’ is complete.

And also zero tolerance for cowardice. “I was in fear for my life” is more of a handy excuse than it is usually the case. For a cop to be in fear for his or her life when in reality there is no such threat, it’s evidence of a lack of situational awareness and reflex control. It’s either cowardice, unprofessionalism or both. Cops: You don’t have to love ‘em.

Why would the cops have any respect for the media? Their mission is to indict cops, trumpet race when its white on black, always make the cops the bad guys and never give them the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Much like many Freepers.

Who took the picture of this cop and photographer? Did the cop harrass that photographer as well?

Today they may arrest you for wearing “tactical gear”. Tomorrow they may arrest you for thinking of wearing “tactical gear”.
Freedom is slipping away at a very fast pace.

Well, sure. The reporter is just lucky has wasn't wearing a tactical hat. That could have cost him some serious federal time.

...and then what if a photographer photographed THAT photography being harassed?

And then THAT photographer was harassed, and yet ANOTHER photographer...

Eventually, someone would have to tell the cop: “It’s photographers all the way down...”
