• "Six hundred Jewish and Serbian prisoners at Jasenovac, Croatia, revolt against their guards.
  520 prisoners are killed by machine-gun fire and grenades.
  The other 80, including 20 Jews, escape."

"These children, survivors of the Bergen-Belsen, Germany, camp, play with toys seized from surrounding towns by Allied soldiers.
With about six million Jews murdered during World War II, it is probable that most of these children were orphans who had no place to go.
Such scenes were not unusual; a large percentage of the inhabitants of the displaced-person camps were children and adolescents."

"Nazi exploitation of their victims extended beyond plundered hair and dental gold. It included even the ashes of the murdered.
At some camps, random ashes were collected in urns and sold to grieving survivors as the remains of specific loved ones.
This urn and barrel of ash were discovered at the Flossenbürg, Germany, concentration camp, where commandant Hans Vogel made tidy sums from the deception."

"These Polish women partisan soldiers had been captured by the Germans in the battle for Warsaw in the fall of 1944.
The women were liberated from German prisoner-of-war camps by Polish troops near Emden, Germany.
Some of the liberators found their wives here.
The Germans recognized some rights for West European soldiers who became POWs.
The Nazis treated gentile partisans less well, and accorded no rights at all to Jewish civilians."

Nazi concentration camp Sachsenhausen liberated 70 years ago today (Apr 22 1945)

(Sunday, April 22, 1945) — The remaining 3,000 inmates, including 1,400 women, at the Nazi concentration camp Sachsenhausen in Oranienburg, Germany, (35 km north of the center of Berlin) used primarily for political prisoners, were liberated today by the Red Army and the Polish Army’s 2nd Infantry Division.

Some 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. due to the poor living conditions between 1936 and 1945. Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation.

Orders To His Western Armies Concerning Guerrilla Warfare

The situation on the Western Front is unfavorable to us because of the enemy’s superiority in manpower, material and ammunition. Despite this, or rather because of it, we have to keep our energy up to key pitch.

Only attacks against the enemy’s flanks and rear, with the disruption and cutting of his lines of communication, can guarantee success. Success in battle consists of constant attacks on the enemy’s rear in conjunction with partisan warfare. The main point in these attacks is to force the enemy with cunning and guile into positions in which his troops are spread out all over the country and in the greatest strength in those areas where he cannot afford it.

Our own attacks have therefore not to be directed against the enemy’s strong points but against his weak spots-the flanks, the rear and the lines of communication-if possible in his administrative areas. Infiltration of our own attacking troops through the enemy lines is therefore of supreme importance.

We have to adopt the same method which was shown and taught us by the Russians in the years 1942-44. Our men have to infiltrate through the lines by ones or in small groups supplied with sufficient ammunition, petrol and other materials, and must attack only if they reach the rear areas where they can achieve complete surprise against the most sensitive points.

This order will naturally be applied to any major operation.

This order will be transmitted immediately to all troops of the army in the west.
