NORWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A coyote attack in Norwood, N.J. has residents on edge.

Stephen Sinisi said he was walking his dog, Raleigh, near the woods on McClellan Street and D’Ercole Court after 9 p.m. Sunday when he saw what he thought was a stray dog approaching.

“I was walking back and what looked like a dog approaching me,” Sinisi told CBS2’s Meg Baker. “Then we got closer I was like, ‘No, this is not a stray dog,’” he told 1010 WINS’ Rebecca Granet. Sinisi was attacked as he tried to get his dog back into the house.

LOL. You remind me of my Irish grandmother. Whenever we’d go out for just a walk or to the park she’d bring an old cane. “In case we meet a friendly dog.”

Now having a wee grandson that I take for walks on our local nature trail I’m thinking I should do the same thing.

I’ve seen coyotes make their way pretty far into the interior of Chicago, they use the forest preserves and freight train tracks to bypass the areas with a lot of human traffic. When we used to go up on the tracks at night to drink a few beers, you could spot em sneaking around in the moonlight.

Now the park near my house has a huge Northern Goshawk hunting the local squirrels. They are only supposed to rarely venture this far south, and avoid populated areas, but he seems right at home and has stuck around for over six months now, showing no real fear of us humans.

My folks are out in Arizona, in the northern “high desert” area, and there are bobcats and cougars all over the place. They’ll walk right into the subdivisions at night to find water (and grab any loose housepets).

There was a lady from California that moved in and she had “outdoor cats” that she let roam around. They disappeared very quickly and I don’t think anyone had the heart to tell her what happened.

They seem, mostly, to be talking about eastern coyotes on this thread. I have read coyotes in that part of the country have interbred with wolves at some point and carry those genes. Not so with western coyotes.

I had Irish grandparents on my mother’s side. Even after decades of life in the city of New York, they still had settled ways of doing things that traced back to the old country — meaning County Cork and Dublin. And a few years ago, visiting cousins from Dublin were pleased to detect Irish rowdiness in my generation’s manners and conduct.

But, those looks like wolves, not coyotes. Coyotes are a lot smaller. Am I wrong?

I guess the upshot of all this ‘migration’ is - ‘can’t we all just get along - ?’

Re. taking a cane while walking on your local nature trail - - -

Sure - why not? With or without a young child along.
A cane is something, at the least.

I always pack while walking my dog, and just about anything else.

I'm not dressed until the holster is on the belt and the weapon in the holster.

At 9pm at night, they normally attack in packs. Strange for it to have been a solitary coyote.

“A cane is something, at the least.”

Yes, that was my thought, exactly.
