The one thing everyone agrees on, but doesn't discuss, is the fact that Mexico sucks!

If Mexico didn't suck, Mexicans would stay in the own country.

legal immigrants would be less dependent and loyal to the progressive socialist causes, and less of an adverse impact on the US economy?

Immigrants, legal and illegal, use the welfare system to a far greater extent than the native born. Immigrants are natural Dem constituents. They favor Big Government.

Are you intentionally missing the point?

The 11 to 20 Million ILLEGAL Immigrants have a SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER IMPACT on wages than the 1 million legal immigrants.

If you’d like to stand in the political wilderness and attempt to argue against legal immigration, please don’t drag the rest of us down this rat hole.

Are you intentionally missing the point?

Larry, you are the missing the point and the facts.

The 11 to 20 Million ILLEGAL Immigrants have a SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER IMPACT on wages than the 1 million legal immigrants.

1 Million legal immigrants? 30 million LEGAL PERMANENT IMMIGRANTS have entered this country since 1990. We have just had the two largest decades of legal immigration in American history. 1.1 million legal immigrants enter EVERY YEAR.

Legal immigration is far more of a problem. They can get welfare benefits legally and they can eventually vote. Check out my posts 20 and 24.

If you’d like to stand in the political wilderness and attempt to argue against legal immigration, please don’t drag the rest of us down this rat hole.

We are going down the rat hole unless we reduce legal immigration. We are destroying our middle class and importing poverty and future Dem voters. Jeff Sessions wrote the following to the NYT a few days ago:

In 1970, fewer than 1 in 21 United States residents were born abroad. Five years from today, the Census Bureau estimates that more than one in seven United States residents will have been born abroad. Eight years from today, the share of the population that is foreign-born will rise above any level ever before recorded and keep surging.

It defies reason to argue that the record admission of new foreign workers has no negative effect on the wages of American workers, including the wages of past immigrants hoping to climb into the middle class. Why would many of the largest business groups in the United States spend millions lobbying for the admission of more foreign workers if such policies did not cut labor costs? The New York Times once plainly acknowledged as much, writing in a 2000 editorial: “Between about 1980 and 1995, the gap between the wages of high school dropouts and all other workers widened substantially. Prof. George Borjas of Harvard estimates that almost half of this trend can be traced to immigration of unskilled workers.”

Since that sentence was published, another 18 million immigrants have arrived in the United States, while the share of Americans in the work force has declined almost five percentage points.

Reuters says Americans, by a nearly 3-to-1 margin, wish to see immigration reduced, not increased. Policy makers and voters should be openly discussing this issue of national interest. Efforts to intimidate Americans into silence will no longer work.

JEFF SESSIONS Chairman, Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, Washington

Phylis Sclafly published the following study over a year ago: How Mass (Legal) Immigration Dooms a Conservative Republican Party

Wake up and smell the coffee Larry. Why do you think the Dems want to continue to bring in larger and larger numbers of legal immigrants as well as granting citizenship to lawbreakers? They want to become the permanent majority party and they are well on their way to doing so. If you and other so-called conservatives are so intimidated by the left and the RINOs to have a rational discussion on the public policy issues of legal immigration then you are fools or traitors. The overwhelming majority of Americans want legal immigration reduced. You stand with the corporate and political elites while I stand with the people.

Demography is destiny. By 2043 non-Hispanic whites will be a minority. By 2019 half of the children 18 and under will be minorities. This is the result of the Immigration Act of 1965 that changed the demographics of this country forever.

There is a valid need for our country to control immigration (even of relatives of citizens), and to “select” the type of immigrant allowed in.

In this case, let's discuss visas that lead to citizenship.

My mother took 7+ years in the 50’s to get her full citizenship, and she came from East Germany. My former boss at TI took 11+ years to get citizenship (Colombia, multiple degrees). His wife took 13+ years to get citizenship (Colombia, board certified pediatric dentist), both started in the early 90's.

It seems that the State Dept has moved the allowable quotas from European & certain Asian countries to 3rd world basketcases. The process is getting so delayed that we now hear of applicants losing their place in line for any irregularity, from leaving the country to attend a funeral to losing a job. A 5 - 7 year process is fine, but most applicants wait 10+ years. And there are plenty of exceptions to the rules that somehow allow certain foreigners to get citizenship amazingly fast.

There is NO reason for any foreigner to play by the rules anymore. Just grab a student or tourist visa and disappear into the local community.

I understand that Congress makes rules but the State Dept implements them, and has created the aforementioned Bureaucrat Hell.

Try and get a persecuted Christian family in from Europe or Russia, compared to the waves that walk across a river or out of an airport at LAX into the community.

Makes no sense at all to anyone playing by the rules.

I’ll continue to focus on the illegal issue.

Each individual case is different so without knowing all the facts, it is difficult to know why the differences. Under normal circumstances, once someone gains admission to the US under a permae4nt immigrant visa, they receive their green card. They then have the option of applying for citizenship (naturalization) after five years at a minimum. You must meet the following requirements in order to apply for naturalization:

Be 18 or older at the time of filing

Be a green card holder for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

Have lived within the state, or USCIS district with jurisdiction over the applicant’s place of residence, for at least 3 months prior to the date of filing the application

Have continuous residence in the United States as a green card holder for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing the application

Be physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing the application

Reside continuously within the United States from the date of application for naturalization up to the time of naturalization

Be able to read, write, and speak English and have knowledge and an understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).

Be a person of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States during all relevant periods under the law

When you state that your mother took 7+ years to get "full citizenship," did the clock start after she gained admission to the US or are you including the time she applied for a permanent immigrant visa?

Did your boss come here under a temporary work visa, e.g. an H-1B visa? If so, 11+ years is not unusual. The maximum length of stay for an H-1B visa is six years. The employer can sponsor them for a green card. The H-1B visa can be extended for one to three year increments while applying for a green card up to 10 years for certain people. Without knowing how his wife got here, he could not sponsor her for naturalization until he got his green card.

The State Department has nothing to do with it. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services makes that determination and it is under DHS. Obama has contributed to the delays with his executive amnesties. The 2012 DACA amnesty has to date legalized the stats of 580,000 Dreamers. FYI: 60% of all the Green Cards issued every year relate to change of status. This means that the people are already here legally under one visa and are changing status. And I have no doubt that USCIS is playing games with country quotas. Only 12% of the immigrant visas are based on merit. The rest are due to kinship.

I understand that Congress makes rules but the State Dept implements them, and has created the aforementioned Bureaucrat Hell.

Wrong. The State Department only gets involved in processing immigrant visas overseas in accordance with the laws made by Congress and the regulations of USCIS. The vast majority of the processing is done by ICE. DHS is the responsible cabinet level department.

There is NO reason for any foreigner to play by the rules anymore. Just grab a student or tourist visa and disappear into the local community.

If you want to be a lawbreaker who must violate a host of laws in order to survive, then being an outlaw is the way to go. If you are an illegal alien, you cannot work legally and cannot be hired legally; you are not entitled to an SSN or any welfare benefits, you cannot vote, etc. The fact that 4.5 million are waiting their turn overseas to come in legally, then there is something to be said for doing it legally.

If Obama is successful in his executive amnesty, then you have a point. It sends the message to anyone contemplating coming here to do so illegally and you will eventually be made legal. When you reward something, you get more of it.

Thank you for the civics lesson. I was unaware of that the USCIS was under DHS.

So far it seems that the illegal method will pay off again, as it did in the 80’s. I just don't see anyone in power that will oppose it.

The reaction to Obama’s 2012 Dreamer’s amnesty should give you a clue. It was non-existent, which paved the way for the current one. The Dems and GOPe want an amnesty to satisfy their corporate paymasters. Once that is achieved, the country is finished for good. Amnesty is forever.
